On Thursday, November 14, students walked the halls of GRB ready to start a conversation.
Held on this day after school were student-led conversations, previously known as student-led conferences. Students came to talk about how they are doing in school, what achievements they have completed, and what their goals are.
Students could present their conversation by either making a PowerPoint or just simply having a conversation. Last year, being able to just have a conversation was not encouraged. This year, the new option gave students more freedom and gave busy students who do not have time to make a PowerPoint a chance to just be able to talk about their academics and success.
Junior Bryce Carroll said, "I am in a lot of advanced classes that require a lot of work and studying. Being able to just have a conversation and not worry about making a PowerPoint on top of all my other work was a lot less stressful."
Student conversations are made to be student-led. Students having more freedom on the format they use when it comes to presenting helps with this.
Along with it being easier, being able to just talk had other benefits.
Social studies teacher Mrs. Ruzekowicz commented, "I think having the option to just be able to talk is great for preparing students for college and job interviews."
Principal Mrs. Parkhurst also saw a drastic change this year. She noted, "I had positive comments from students. They felt it was more relevant this year, which is something we are always looking for."
In addition to student conversations being held this night, there was also the Job Opportunities Fair going on.
The fair was held in the library and offered a bunch of after-high school choices for students to consider. This included things such as college, joining a union, and other jobs.
Companies such as Huhtamaki, Novelis, Ironworks, and Oswego Health attended. All together there were at least 20 different companies there with representatives happy to share information with GRB students.
Mrs. Parkhurst was also excited about the Job Opportunities Fair. She said, "It was a great turn out and we are shooting for even more next year."
If students could not attend this night, there is always the option of visiting the Career Exploration Center, located in the library. Feel free to see Mrs. Ferlito with any questions about it.
Mrs. Ferlito says she is just trying to use community resources to help the students here be successful.
Junior Madison Johnson said, "It is great to see the school caring about our success after high school. Maybe they know what they are doing after all."
Life after high school can be scary, but here at GRB there are many resources to help you be prepared. Make sure to pay attention to announcements for any additional opportunities.
