Most people, as they grow older, have a "bucket list." Usually, everyone wants to learn another language. My advice is don't wait until you are older to do this! It can be fun and to your advantage to start now.
There is evidence that learning another language boosts your memory. Who doesn’t need a better memory when we take our exams here at G.R.B? Science suggests that bilingual speakers demonstrate an increased capacity for problem-solving. The research also shows that those who are bilingual have less probability of getting dementia or Alzheimer's Disease later in life.
For me, one of the most important reasons is that knowing another language encourages cultural appreciation and contributes to greater tolerance because of the exposure to a variety of cultures. Some studies show there is a correlation between being bilingual and having a more positive outlook.
Junior Geiler Vasquez Ramirez, a student from Guatemala, has been here only two years. Although he is struggling a bit to learn English, he said, "Being bilingual affords you more possibilities to travel and to think in different ways." He went on to say that because he knows Spanish, he is able to express himself better as he learns English.
Another student, senior Yeimi Reynoso Boch, said that it definitely will help her get a better job.
ENL teacher Mrs. Doran remarked that she feels the students who speak Spanish have double the vocabulary, their spelling in English is better, and they might use the other language as a way to escape sometimes.
Whatever the reasons, being bilingual has many advantages proven by scientific facts. Your bucket list may or may not have included learning another language, but at least here at GRB, you could have fun and make new friends. Or, you can experience the Hispanic atmosphere and you can share what's on your "listado de deseos."
