The girls varsity softball team had its first round of Sectionals on Thursday, May 30 against Christian Brothers Academy at CBA. CBA was seeded second and Fulton was seeded seventh for the quarterfinal game. With a great upset, Fulton came out on top with an amazing win of 12-3.
This was truly a wonderful achievement for the girls because in the last five years, this is the first time the Fulton Varsity Softball team has advanced past the quarterfinals of Sectionals.
Freshman Lydia Mirabito explained that the whole team was involved in the win. Mirabito described how all of the cheering from the players on and off the field brought the entire team together and that everyone built off of each others' successes.
Coach Lyons was extremely proud of how well the team played and noted senior Camille Stevenson’s pitching, junior Maddy Gilmore’s hitting, and the entire team’s hitting as a whole. Gilmore had two crucial out-of-the-park home runs, which spurred the team on to hit spectacularly.
There were many times where the girls had two outs while hitting, but instead of giving up, they fought and scored many important runs with the looming threat of that third out.
Senior Erin Waloven exuberantly exclaimed that the team “played their best game all season long." She loved how well the team hit as well as their impeccable plays in the field, while also picking each other up after errors.
The Lady Raiders will continue on with their Sectional journey and will be playing Whitesboro at Carrier Park on Friday, May 31 at 5:00 p.m.
Great job so far, ladies! Keep up the great work and good luck!
