Hockey Seniors Honored

The Raider hockey team honored their five seniors on Saturday, February 9. The Raiders' original Senior Night was scheduled for Thursday, February 7, but was moved because of a Snow Day. The Raiders faced CBA.

The five seniors were Nate Lindsey, Joe Galvagno, Jon McCann, Kaleb Calkins, and Eric Shear. Lindsey and Galvagno have been on the varsity team all four years of high school while McCann and Shear have been on the team for three years. Calkins has been on the team for two seasons.

The senior recognition flew by. The seniors had a rose for their moms and a picture for their dads. They had their picture taken with their parents while listening to the short speech about them.

Galvagno stated, “Senior night on Saturday meant a lot to me. It was not only a symbol of the end of seniors' high school hockey careers, but a recognition of all the hard work we have put in over the years. It was a special night for everyone and really made me, along with the other seniors, look back on the past and recognize each others' accomplishments through the years.”

The Raiders had another goal that night. They wanted to host a playoff game. If the Red Raiders won that game, they would host a playoff game.

The Raiders came out slow and lazy. After the first period, the Raiders were down 3-0. Coach Bartlett made a few line changes to try and change the momentum.

The Raiders gave up another goal early in the second period but fought back and scored one of their own. The goal coming from Galvagno was assisted by sophomore Derick Schumaker. The Raiders looked as if they were going to turn the game around. However, that was not the case. The Red Raiders had a few unfortunate bounces and were down 6-1 at the end of the second.

The Raiders came out in the third period and never gave up. The Red Raiders played very well in the last five minutes of the game, but it was too little too late. They ended up losing the game 6-1.

Calkins stated, “It was a tough game, but it was definitely one of the best moments in hockey for me.”

The Raiders will now play the CNS Northstars, who they defeated 5-4 earlier this season. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, February 13 in Cicero.

McCann stated, “In order to be successful again, we cannot look down on CNS or take them lightly like we did with CBA. If we respect their talents and work harder than they do, then we will come out with a win.”
