On Saturday, May 18, three members of the Boys Tennis team represented Fulton at the Section III Class A tournament. Those players were Collin Bennett, Eric Shear, and Caleb Dahar.
Dahar was in the third singles draw and played his first round match against West Genesee. West Genesee was seeded third in that draw. Dahar lost that match 0-6 1-6. He was knocked out of the tournament after that loss.
Dahar stated, βI am happy to have made Sectionals this season. It was a goal of mine at the start of the year. I hope to come back next season and go even farther.β
Bennett was the number one seed in second singles. He had a bye in the first round. He then had to face CNS in the second round. He lost that match 0-6 3-6. However, Bennett made it far enough to play in the consolation match against the number two-seeded Baldwinsville. Bennett played a close match, but came up just short. The final score of that match was 2-6 4-6. Bennett came in fourth place.
Bennett noted, βIt is not the end I had hoped for this season, obviously. I really enjoyed my time on the team. I am so upset that tennis is over.β
Shear was the second seed in the first singles. In the first round, he faced off against West Genesee. Shear won that match 6-0 6-0. In the semifinals, he had to face Auburn. Shear ended up winning that match 7-5 6-1, advancing him into the finals against the top-seeded Baldwinsville. Shear claimed the Section III Class A First Singles Title after beating Baldwinsville 6-2 6-2. He advanced to the state qualifiers on Wednesday, May 22.
Coach Goodnough stated, "As far as the weather was concerned, Sectionals couldn't have been more perfect. Moderate temperatures, dry weather, and sunshine - a perfect weather pattern for tennis."
He continued, "The three Fulton tennis players who qualified for Sectionals competed well and represented our school and community with poise. While there were many high moments, the apex was watching Eric win championship point in his third match of the day at first singles. I was thrilled for him personally and for what this means for our team after a tough rebuilding year, and our program overall."
Congratulations to all of the athletes who participated in the Section tournament.
