The beaver dissection is something that Mr. Mainville has done just about every school year and to not do it this year would have been mighty unfortunate.

GRB Science Teacher Conducts Beaver Dissection Online

On Friday, May 1, AP biology teacher Mr. Dan Mainville continued his yearly tradition of dissecting a beaver in order to teach his students about the inner workings of animals.

This year, he did things a little differently since he was doing it from home instead of his classroom. He said, "Being outside was amazing. Cool air, spring time, birds chirping, the way all dissections should be performed. It also dispersed odors better."

However, he also felt a little self-conscious about the presentation, saying, "I felt, like most of the time these days, like I was just talking out loud to myself. Usually there is feedback or a student's question that probes deeper that reveals interesting connections between our own physiology and the beaver."

Freshman Sutter Lewin described the experience as "amazing, wonderful, (a) masterpiece of science" and found it to be great overall.

With these trying times, both students and teachers are having to adjust to working and learning from home, and if Mr. Mainville's demonstration is anything to go by, it has its pros and cons.
