On Friday, May 24, GRB's Art Club went to New York City and a fun time was had by all. They got to the high school bright and early at 4:15 a.m. to leave by the scheduled time of 4:30 a.m. They arrived in New York City around 9 a.m.
Although there was some trouble with the subway tickets, the students still were scheduled to be on time for the tourist spots. However, once on the subway they ended up going in the wrong direction. Mrs. Tyler and Mrs. Williams quickly figured out what they needed to do to get back on track. After getting off the train, they waited for the right one. There was an announcement saying their train was experiencing delays, leading them to make the decision to walk about a mile through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The students were able to see wonderful works of art throughout their time at the MET. With many different rooms for different eras, there was much to see. The students were not able to visit every room given how big the museum is, but what they were able to see was pretty magnificent.
After the MET, the students then ate a brief lunch in Central Park before they traveled to see the MoMA. This museum had more modern art and was much smaller so the students were able to see everything that was available, with only two floors closed off.
The students then were allowed to have some free time for shopping around Times Square. With streets filled with people trying to get to their destination, it was very crowded. Maneuvering through the streets was very hard and interesting to say the least as people were expressing their character and dressing up for people to take pictures with.
Students were able to go into different stores to shop around and get what they pleased. Mrs. Williams ended up spending $4 to take a picture with Pikachu and a minion. NYC is not cheap, to say the least.
After their time shopping, it was time for dinner at a pizzeria. It was buffet style and provided a very delicious meal with dessert to follow. The students ate quickly because they wanted to go back to shopping around Times Square to shop for the remaining time they had to spend there.
Although no famous people were spotted, everyone had a great time exploring the Big Apple and everything it has to offer.
Mrs. Williams stated, “It was a unique experience both with the art and getting to know my students on a whole different level.”
Senior Julia Granato explained, “Don’t try to sit in comfy seats at the MoMA. You will get in trouble.”
Sophomore Brandy Recore said, “The experience was good and the artwork was interesting.”
