The Fulton Varsity Swim Team had a bittersweet meet against West Genesee on January 24 because it was their last home meet and because they celebrated their graduating seniors, Katie Distin, Kelsey Rosenbarker, Jenna Ruzekowicz, Ean Stevenson, and Camille Stevenson. This was an especially memorable meet for the swim team because they beat one of their toughest rivals, West Genesee, with a score of 101-84.
Coach Lacey had many heart-warming and witty words to share with friends and family about the graduating seniors.
He noted that it was one of his "most memorable senior nights” and he said it felt humbling to beat West Genny because he has so much respect for their coach and program.
Coach Lacey continues to push the team everyday and has the ultimate goal to win Class B Sectionals.
Coach Lacey is sorry to lose the seniors. He said Camille and Distin both “possess unique personalities that I grew to appreciate and wished I had grown to appreciate earlier on."
He described Ean as a “raw and powerful” swimmer but jested that he may not be as funny as he thinks and that he swims like a McDonald’s wind-up toy. Ean holds the boys' school record for the 200 Yard Medley Relay along with Mark Tallents, Alex Samchenko, and Nate Archer.
Coach Lacey described Ruzekowicz as a great leader and teammate who was "always on top of everything from day one" and contributed greatly to the team. She holds the girls' school record for the 100 Yard Butterfly.
He also regaled Rosenbarker as a hard worker because swimming is a difficult sport and without prior experience she fought through four years of physically demanding workouts and didn’t let anything stop her from achieving her goals. He said he found that inspiring.
The seniors had a great time at the meet. Ean said it was “hysterical how Coach roasted me for five minutes” and that it felt amazing to beat West Genesee.
Ruzekowicz described it as a “wonderful night with a great student section."
Overall, it was an amazing swim meet for the Fulton Varsity Swim Team. Go and show your support at their sectional swim meet on February 14 at Nottingham High School.
Good luck, Red Raiders! Bring home the win!
