On Wednesday May 22, senior Liz Roik participated in Girls Varsity Golf Sectionals with the Oswego team. The tournament went over quite well and although she did not win, she is happy with her performance. She ended the night with a score of 110, which is a record score for her.
It was an all-day event that was originally supposed to take place on Tuesday, May 21 at Kanon Valley Country Club, but due to bad course conditions the match was moved to Wednesday at Barker Brook Golf Club located in Oriskany Falls, NY.
The tournament began at 8:30 a.m. It was a great day with warm weather and great course conditions. Roik’s teammates scored well for not playing the course beforehand.
There were 33 teams from all over New York State with 80 participants. It was a tough competition. In the end, four girls had to go into a sudden death round to determine who would advance on to the state team, as they all tied for second place.
Although none of the girls made the state team, it was a great experience for everyone as there was a lot of team bonding on the long bus ride home and they got to learn many new things from the diverse group of golfers they met and played alongside.
Roik said, "I am happy with the way that things turned out as this was my first time at golf Sectionals. I am thankful for being able to have this incredible oppurtunity to play with the Oswego girls for an amazing end to my senior year."
Oswego junior Hailey Furlong stated, "This is my third year making it to Sectionals. Every year, I improve my score. This year was by far the best and the girls on my team have been so fun to play with. I can't wait until next year to hopefully have more fun, and improve my score even more. I have had so much fun this season and Sectionals could not have been a better ending to a great season."
Oswego junior Paige Sawyer said, "My first Sectionals experience was amazing. I may not have gotten the score that I wanted, but I had fun and that's all that matters."
