This week was the last week of the boys tennis season. The Raiders took on the Auburn Maroons in their last match of the season.
On May 15, the Raiders hosted Auburn for their senior night. The Raiders have five seniors on their team, including Collin Bennett, Jon Simpson, Eric Shear, Steven Thompson, and Ryan Barry.
Shear won his match at first singles 4-6 6-4 6-3. Bennett won his match at second singles with ease. His score was 6-1 6-0. Sophomore Caleb Dahar also picked up a win at third singles. He won 6-1 6-2.
Junior Kyle Hotaling and sophomore Brasen Jodway lost at first doubles 4-6 1-6. Sophomore Sidney Bradshaw and freshman Ryan Nichols lost at second doubles 1-6 4-6. Simpson and Thompson lost a tight match at third doubles 3-6 4-6. Sophomore David Cordone and freshman Noah Cordone lost their fourth doubles match 0-6 1-6.
The team broke a school record because they are the only boys tennis team ever that did not win a match in a season. This is certainly not the kind of record the team was aiming to break.
Bennett stated, “It’s hard to not have won a match in my last season. I have Sectionals to look forward to with Eric and Caleb, but it is not the way I wanted to go out.”
Thompson stated, “Tennis has been a blast for me this year and last year. I wish I had joined earlier.”
Simpson noted, “Four years on this team has been fantastic. The team has had our ups and downs, but overall, I really enjoyed it.”
Sectionals will be on Saturday, May 18 at Fayetteville-Manlius High School starting at 8:30 a.m.
Dahar has qualified at third singles. This is his first year making it to Sectionals.
Bennett also qualified for Sectionals this season at second singles. This will be his second year competing at Sectionals.
Shear also has qualified for Sectionals this season. This is his fifth season competing for a section title.
