The varsity boys basketball team has concluded a very successful season in which it won 10 games and qualified for Sectionals, two feats that have not been accomplished in a number of years. Off the court, the team was active in the classroom as well as the community.
The team had several stand-out performances. Senior captain Jake Gugula was the team's leading scorer. He had 403 points this season and 958 points throughout his varsity career. He also had 229 rebounds this season.
Junior Seth Grimshaw and sophomore Jack Broderick racked up 208 and 186 points respectively, as well.
The team was also able to make the sectional tournament. Gugula said, "We set a team goal at the start of the season to make the sectionals and through a lot of dedication, great teammates, and the 'grind' we were able to achieve that goal."
Senior JJ Knoop also commented on the memorable season saying, "It was a great experience to play in front of so many fans. Our team really appreciated all the students and members of the community who came out to support us. It gave me some memories I will never forget."
The Raider basketball team don't just do great things on game days, but they also worked hard in the classroom. They were awarded the Scholar Athlete Team Award with an overall GPA of 92.59.
They didn't stop there, however. They also performed over 125 community service hours as a team.
The culture within the program pushes the players not only to work hard to win games and become better basketball players, but also to be good students and active members of their community. Head Coach Sean Broderick is a large proponent of building the character of his players as well as their physical abilities.
Coach Broderick stated, "I am extremely proud of this group of student athletes. They set goals for themselves and worked hard everyday to achieve them. They represented themselves extremely well in the classroom, in our community, and on the court. "
He emphasized the culture developed through the season relative to a team-first mentality and a focus on sacrificing for each other and working extremely hard every day to get better. He also expressed gratitude to the students and community who came out to support this year's team in numbers far exceeding recent years.
Broderick noted how much the seniors will be missed and that they have left a "high bar" for the program based on the culture they have set.
We should expect another successful season next year with five returning players and several talented players moving up from JV. With the support of our school community, they will continue to accomplish great things.
