Captains Club is a group at G. Ray Bodley High School where captains of high school athletic teams come together to collaborate on leadership and teamwork.
This gives captains an opportunity to get together with leaders from other sports to share ideas about what is working in their sport and to give them an idea on what needs to change or be improved.
The Captains are also encouraged and afforded the opportunity to participate on conference calls with captains and leaders from other schools' athletic teams.
Captains Club members change when the sports season changes as the fall captains are different from the winter and spring sports seasons. Each season they contribute ideas to better their athletic programs and make their seasons better.
Varsity boys basketball coach Mr. Broderick said, "Captains club is a great opportunity for the student athletes at Fulton. This is a leadership development tool which not only benefits our captains in terms of their leadership skills, but also benefits the team as a whole."
Varsity girls basketball and softball coach Mr. Lyons said, "I think it is very important for our young athletes to learn the proper ways to be good leaders."
Varsity boys soccer coach Mr. Murray said, "I am a huge fan of making the label of a captain mean more than just a label. I think captains should be chosen that have leadership qualities and that those qualities are turned into leadership skills."
He went on to say, "Many of our captains simply call heads or tails and call it a day. I try to coach my captains to lead their team. We spend time in the off-season discussing things that can be done to be a good leader. They lead messages to the team, they organize off-season workouts, and team-building activities. The idea behind Captains Club adds to leadership skills in a different way."
