On Thursday, March 14, otherwise known as Pi Day, nine school districts battled it out at Holy Trinity School in Fulton to claim victory and the respect of being superior mathematicians.
The students who victoriously achieved second place among some of the smartest school districts in the area include Sebastien Honeywell, Jenna Ruzekowicz, Shaylee Cealie, Nora Kingsbury, Andrew Hyde, Nick Brown, Ean Stevenson, Camille Stevenson, Mark Tallents, and Saskia Pirttiniemi.
Pulaski, Mexico, Oswego, Sandy Creek, APW, Fulton, Central Square, Phoenix, and Hannibal went head-to-head by completing tasks revolving around the idea and concept of pi. These tasks included math relays, calculating dinner and tax prices, creating a pi poster, reciting 100 digits of pi, and developing a skit with artistic and creative mathematical lyrics.
As a veteran of many OCAY competitions, Ruzekowicz explained how the whole team “had a blast” and was more than happy to have earned second place. This places Fulton in a close fourth place behind Central Square, Oswego, and Mexico for their overall score.
The top three scorers of the Pi Day event were Central Square placing first, Fulton placing second, and Oswego placing third. OCAY veteran Hyde said it was very exciting to have beat their rival, Oswego, and that their team worked well together and had many accomplishments.
Cealie, another OCAY veteran, described the competition as being a really fun and challenging day full of pi. She was extremely proud of her team and was glad to have had the opportunity to go.
The Fulton OCAY team ended their epic Pi Day by chanting, in tribute to math teacher Mrs. Ryan, “Pi, Pi, cosine Pi, 3.14159. Two, four, six, eight. We think Pi is great. We think Pi is sweet. It can be a tasty treat!”
