Student Leaders Ready to Increase Raider Pride

By Jadelyn Phillips

Club advisors and student representatives came together in the cafeteria on May 15 to discuss ways they can be involved in increasing Raider Pride.

On May 15, representatives from each club in the high school, including both students and advisors, met up after school to discuss many subjects.

Most subjects discussed were the ideas of senior Caleb Clarke and they focus on improving Raider pride. Those topics include communication, athletics, school events, fundraisers, Raider pride, and other points.

Principal Mrs. Parkhurst presented the ideas because Clarke was taking an AP exam and could not make the meeting.

Students were asked to share feedback on each of the ideas and the group will meet again before the end of the school year in order to start planning for the fall.

Clarke's ideas for improving Raider Pride involve many components. Clarke makes the point that the school should identify students to be part of Student Senate in addition to the elected class officers. He believes Student Senate should focus on how to involve students in school activities/initiatives, rather than just on fundraising and supporting causes.

Student-run school social media like The Tribe (@the_tribe_2019) on Twitter and Instagram will help, he noted.

Clarke also thinks improvement is needed in the area of recruiting students for athletic teams and suggests adults reaching out to students is most effective. Another point made by Clarke was that a bus is needed for after practices, as some students aren't involved in athletics because of lack of transportation.

As a way to get more students to go to games and enjoy being part of Raider Pride at GRB, creating a student section in the stands and hanging up banners as well as theme nights for games and even having a Pep Band for certain sports like football and lacrosse might help, he suggests.

Clarke said, "Our goal here is to connect more students and to try to get them to realize that we have a great school. We need to show the students that GRB is more than a place we're forced to go where we don't have any fun. GRB is an awesome school. We are just trying to improve the way students think about our school."

Pep rallies would be another huge addition with the plan to bring back a winter pep rally and possibly have a pep rally each quarter or each sport season to keep students involved.

Raider branded clothes and accessories could become available to every student, not just certain groups of people. This includes sweats, hoodies, t-shirts, lanyards, windbreakers, and car stickers.

These changes to GRB are big for the attitudes of our students. If students are seeing that school can be fun, not just textbooks and laptops, and if more students realize that school can be enjoyable, maybe attendance rates will go up and these improved attitudes will reflect in higher grades and more participation in classrooms.

Student Senate Advisor Ms. Florio attended the meeting with Student Senate members and said, "As a teacher and member of the Fulton community, I was excited to hear about our students embracing more Raider Pride. It was a great opportunity to share student-owned ideas."
