The Madness Continues

By Rylie Cotton

March Madness is a single elimination college basketball tournament that began Tuesday, March 19. It is a 64-team field and the tournament will end on Monday, April 8 with two teams playing for the National Championship.

It is expected that 47 million adults will gamble and place money on the tournament games by filling out tournament brackets, selecting each game's winner. Through 48 of the 63 games of the 2019 NCAA tournament, there is just one perfect bracket left across all major online brackets. By reaching the Sweet 16, the bracket holder now has the longest streak of correct bracket picks people have ever seen, shattering the previously reported record of 39 games.

The highlight of each year's tournament is the Final Four. This is the last four teams left in the tournament. The more teams you have making it this far, the better your chances of winning. The 2019 Final Four will be hosted in U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. It will be the fourth time in NCAA Tournament history that the Final Four will be hosted in Minneapolis and the first time it will take place in U.S. Bank Stadium.

Coach Mr. Lyons said, "Right now, I have 13 of the 16 teams on my bracket in the Sweet 16. My Championship team is still alive and if Duke would have lost I would be doing a lot better. Go Virginia."

Social Studies teacher Mrs. Kent said, "I have been a little disappointed with March Madness this year. There have not been many upsets. The 1, 2, 3, 4 top teams advanced for the first time in a long time. There are not that many Cinderellas in the 2019 Sweet 16."

The teams in the 2019 NCAA Sweet 16 are Virginia, Gonzaga, Duke, North Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan State, Kentucky, Purdue, Texas Tech, Michigan, Florida State, Houston, LSU, Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Oregon. Out of the sixteen teams remaining, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, and Gonzaga are the top seeds to advance.
