Boys Basketball Team Enjoying New Opportunities

By Breahna Boots

The members of the GRB boys basketball team are part of a program that offers them many free opportunities.

Two days each week they are given an opportunity to do live Zoom workouts with former Syracuse basketball player Eric Devendorf.

Four days each week they have the opportunity to do live workouts with former NFL player Leroy Collins.

The live workouts are not mandatory, but there are many opportunities for the guys to join when they have free time.

Juniors Jack Broderick, Marcus Shepard, and Dominic Abbot have taken a leadership role and have been talking about what they are doing and the goals they have been setting.

Junior Jack Broderick said, "My academics are really the most important thing I'm focusing on, but I also want all my teammates to take advantage of all of the team and individual live video workouts that are offered to use for free right now. It's a great opportunity for us to work out together, even if we can't be together."

Although staying active and eating well are important, school work and keeping your grades up should still be a top priority.

"My goal is to make honor roll. I'm working with my teachers to stay on task and be sure I'm on target," junior Marcus Shepard said.

Weekly calls on Monday afternoons at 4 p.m. have also been provided for the guys who are a part of the program. A guest speaker is always provided to speak to the guys, as well, and student athletes are also invited to speak each week.

So far, Oswego State Men's Basketball Coach Jason Leone, Cazenovia College Men's Basketball Coach Justin Stem, and Graduate Basketball Coach from Syracuse University Ben Horowitz, have all spoken to the team.

Junior Dominic Abbott said, "I wanted to stress the importance of proper sleep and nutrition. When you don't have to get up for school as early, it's easy to get into bad habits. I'm working hard to stay on a proper schedule and eat right."

On May 11, Nazareth College Head Basketball Coach Kevin Broderick was the team's guest speaker.

"The one thing we all have in common is that we're all going through this," Coach Broderick noted.

We're all currently going through the same historical moment. The best way to get through it is to stick together as a community.

Stay active and continue to learn something new every day, GRB!
