Senior Year Slipping Away

By Sydney Lawson

So far senior year has been nothing like I thought it would be. We started the year stressing out about where our lives would take us after high school. Every other thing people would say to us was, "What do you want to do next year?". Well, I can tell you my response has changed. Big time.

My entire life I’ve planned to go to college, but I never really knew exactly what for and by the time I figured it out I was being locked and quarantined in my house. The class of 2020 is missing out on what could be the best year of their lives.

Senior Chloe Hurlbut-Shepard said, “It’s really devastating to watch things we’ve looked forward to our whole lives slip right away from us. Nobody ever thought this is how our senior year would end."

Not a day goes by that I don't wish I was in G. Ray Bodley High School walking to class with my friends, instead of logging onto my computer to do my daily assignments from my bed. Everyday when I watch the news I’m hoping that the number of Covid-19 cases decreases so we’re still able to walk the stage at graduation in June.

Senior Nevaeh Tucker said, “We have gone to school the last 12 years to have our time to shine. To have the moment we’ve all been waiting for and walk the stage and get our diploma. Now this is being taken from us and there's nothing we can do about it.”

Seniors might have to leave all the memories with all their classmates, friends, and teachers in the past without even a goodbye. Who knew it would all be gone so fast, that Friday, March 13 could possibly be our last chance to walk the halls of the place we considered home for the last four years.

Some seniors don’t even get to play in their senior year of spring sports. They won't even get to have the senior night they’ve looked forward to.

Senior Ian Bogardus said, “Not being able to finish what we’ve started sucks especially for the kids that aren’t playing after high school.”

So to everyone saying that the class of 2020 is over-exaggerating about what we have lost, we’re not. This isn't just a global pandemic to us. This is our forever worst enemy.
