Petar Pajić

Petar Pajić (Valjevo, October the 6th, 1935 - August the 2nd, 2017) was a Serbian poet and novelist. He was born in Valjevo, where he went to gymnasium. He graduated in Yugoslav and world literature at the Philosophical Faculty of the Belgrade University.  Pajić has been a long time Radio Belgrade Second Program editor. He has been considered a neo-symbolist, together with Branko Miljković. Petar considered himself close to Rainer Maria Rilke. Although he received all the renowned literary awards in Serbia, he never had much interest in publicity, and it is a paradox that some of his poems are much better known than he himself.

He left many poems that are among the best in the Serbian poetry of the twentieth century. His poem 'Serbia is in dungeon' which has been written in the seventies and which could not be published until much later, has a shattering power of expression and a clairvoyance of an extraordinary and stunning kind. It has come from a poet who was actually a lyricist and a metaphysicsist at the same time. The poem is among the best ones in the patriotic vein that have ever been written by a Serb, but his spectrum of themes has been very wide, from lyrical to satirical and children's poetry.

He wrote 13 books of poetry and 8 collections of short stories. His death has been mourned by his many prominent literary friends and whole Serbia.
