Veče na školju

Pučina plava

Spava,

Prohladni pada mrak.

Vrh hridi crne

Trne

Zadnji rumeni zrak.

I jeca zvono

Bono,

Po kršu dršće zvuk;

S uzdahom tuge

Duge

Ubogi moli puk.

Kleče mršave

Glave

Pred likom boga svog-

Ištu. Al' tamo,

Samo

Ćuti raspeti bog.

I san sve bliže

Stiže,

Prohladni pada mrak,

Vrh hridi crne

Trne

Zadnji rumeni zrak.

An Evening on a Small Island

The vast blue deep

Is asleep;

                Cool and quiet, falls the night.

Atop dark rocks, dying fast,

The last

                Crimson ray of sunset light.

The church bell tolls;

Its trembling tones

                Over craggy hills resound.

With sighs of endless

Sadness,

                Poor folks are prayer-bound.

Skeletal and grey,

They pray

                On knees before their God,

But no word

Is heard

                From the crucified Lord.

The nearing repose

Is close;

                Cool and quiet, falls the night;

Atop dark rocks, dying fast,

The last

                Crimson ray of sunset light.

Dalmatian Nocture

Sea bluely gleaming, Dreaming;

Chill darkness earthward falls.

The last red glimmer Dimmer

O'er blackened ridges crawls.

And chimes are droning, Moaning,

Trembling where rocks arise;

Prayers have ascended, Blended

With poor men's long-drawn sighs.

Before God's altar Falter

This wailing, haggard brood.

But ne'er is spoken Token

By God upon His rood.

And dreams are nearer, Clearer;

Chill darkness earthward falls.

The last red glimmer Dimmer

O'er blackened ridges crawls.
