Dugo u noć, u zimsku bijelu noć

Dugo u noć, u zimsku bijelu noć

Dugo u noć, u zimsku gluhu noć

Moja mati bijelo platno tka.

Njen pognut lik i prosjede njene kose

Odavna je već zališe suzama.

Trak lampe s prozora pružen je čitavim dvorištem

Po snijegu što vani pada

U tišini bez kraja, u tišini bez kraja;

Anđeli s neba, nježnim rukama,

Spuštaju smrzle zvjezdice na zemlju

Pazeć da ne bi zlato moje probudili.

Dugo u noć, u zimsku pustu noć

Moja mati bijelo platno tka.

O, majko žalosna! Kaži šta to sja

U tvojim očima

Dugo u noć, u zimsku bijelu noć?

Long into the night, into the white winter night

Long into the night, the deaf winter night,

White linen my mother weaves.

Her bending figure and her graying hair

Already filled her with tears.

Light from the window shines over the yard

Where the falling snow lingers:

Frozen little stars are brought to the ground

By angels' gentle fingers,

They are taking care not to make a sound

So my darling could sleep tight.

Long into the night, spreading all around,

Winter silence, bleak and white.

Mother weaves under a lonely lamp light,

In her hands white linen lies.

Oh, sad mother, say! What shines in your eyes

Long into the night, the white winter night?

(translated by Adrian Satja Kurdija)

Long In the Night

Long in the night, in winter late night

My mother weaves a white linen cloth.

Her bent figure and the greying hairs

For a long time soaked it with tears.

The lamp ray from the window spreads over the whole yard

And the snow that falls outside.

In endless silence. In endless silence.

Angels from heaven, with gentle hands

Spread frozen little stars over the ground

Careful not to wake up my precious.

Long in the night, in winter white night

My mother weaves a white linen cloth.

Oh, my sad mother, tell me, what's that shine

In your eyes

Long in the night, in winter white night?
