Lullaby
Wiegelied
Leg je hoofd te slapen, lief
In mijn schoot van ach en wee
Als de tijd straks vluchten gaat
Neemt hij al jouw schoonheid mee,
Want de onschuld van een kind
Valt ooit aan de dood ten prooi;
Laat tot aan de dageraad
Dit een prachtig schepsel zijn,
Kwetsbaar, schuldig, maar voor mij
Niet te overtreffen mooi.
Geest en lichaam zijn steeds één:
Minnaars die zich in het groen
Van heuvels hebben neergevleid,
Zien een prachtig visioen;
Het visioen dat Venus geeft
Vol gevoel, zo bovenaards,
Hoop en liefde, wereldwijd;
En zo wekt een inzicht plots
Tussen gletsjers en de rots
Extase bij de kluizenaar
Zekerheid verdwijnt als sneeuw,
Bij de klok van middernacht,
Hard als echo’s van de bel
En de dwazen hoor je al
Met verveeld pedant geschreeuw;
Alle schulden die nog staan,
Los ik in, zoals voorspeld,
Maar er zal in deze nacht
Geen verzuchting, geen gedachte,
Kus of blik verloren gaan.
Schoonheid, nacht en beeld vervaagt;
Laat heel zacht de ochtendwind
Waaien rond jouw dromend hoofd,
’t Is een dag die nieuw begint,
En die voor jouw kloppend hart
Sterfelijkheid toch draaglijk maakt;
Ook al is de middag droog
Voed je met haar stille kracht,
Door geen nacht van hoon getart,
Omdat liefde jou bewaakt.
Lullaby
Lay your sleeping head, my love,
Human on my faithless arm;
Time and fevers burn away
Individual beauty from
Thoughtful children, and the grave
Proves the child ephemeral:
But in my arms till break of day
Let the living creature lie,
Mortal, guilty, but to me
The entirely beautiful.
Soul and body have no bounds:
To lovers as they lie upon
Her tolerant enchanted slope
In their ordinary swoon,
Grave the vision Venus sends
Of supernatural sympathy,
Universal love and hope;
While an abstract insight wakes
Among the glaciers and the rocks
The hermit's carnal ecstasy.
Certainty, fidelity
On the stroke of midnight pass
Like vibrations of a bell
And fashionable madmen raise
Their pedantic boring cry:
Every farthing of the cost,
All the dreaded cards foretell,
Shall be paid, but from this night
Not a whisper, not a thought,
Not a kiss nor look be lost.
Beauty, midnight, vision dies:
Let the winds of dawn that blow
Softly round your dreaming head
Such a day of welcome show
Eye and knocking heart may bless,
Find our mortal world enough;
Noons of dryness find you fed
By the involuntary powers,
Nights of insult let you pass
Watched by every human love.
