085 Vanitie (II)
IJdelheid II
O dwaze ziel, hoop en hoofd laag bij de grond;
Jouw platte aardse lust gaat kruipend rond;
Voor jou schijnt er geen ster te stralen als
Een oog; geen werk als broddelwerk zo vals;
Luister, opdat wat je ervaart als zoet
Zich straks niet als het zuurste leed voordoet
O luister nu, anders komt jou
Meelij te laat!
De hemel kopen uit berouw
Is obligaat.
Als ziel een aardse vorm behoudt,
Dan liefst van goud;
Wie hoog van stand is,
Laat ze dan vliegen naar verwanten;
Want ware rust vinden zij slechts
Bij terugkeer op het oude nest.
Dan ziet de dwaze ziel dat aardse zin
Een zeepbel is, die jou maakt tot een kind.
Vanitie II
Poore silly soul, whose hope and head lies low;
Whose flat delights on earth do creep and grow;
To whom the starres shine not so fair, as eyes;
Not solid work, as false embroyderies;
Heark and beware, lest what you now do measure
And write for sweet, prove a most sowre displeasure.
O heare betimes, lest thy relenting
May come too late!
To purchase heaven for repenting
Is no hard rate.
If souls be made of earthly mold,
Let them love gold;
If born on high,
Let them unto their kindred flie:
For they can never be at rest,
Till they regain their ancient nest.
Then silly soul take heed; for earthly joy
Is but a bubble, and makes thee a boy.
