151 Discipline
Discipline
Leg uw stok toch neer,
Doe uw wrok toch weg,
O mijn Heer,
Neem de zachte weg.
Dat u mij steeds draagt
Is mijn hartenwens
Wat ik vraag
Is een waar consent
Niet míjn blik of woord
Is hetgeen ik zoek,
Mij bekoort
Enkel maar uw boek.
Want ik faal en ween;
Ja met al mijn schroom,
Heel alleen,
Kruip ik naar uw troon.
Want de liefdesdaad
Overwint de woede
Liefde laat
Stenen harten bloeden.
Liefde is zo snel,
Snel als een soldaat,
Ook van ver
Schiet zij altijd raak.
Wie ontvlucht de boog?
Die U heeft gemaakt’
Mij treft nood
Als U wordt geraakt.
Doe dus weg uw stok
Mensen zijn zo teer
U bent God
Leg uw wrok toch neer.
Discipline
Throw away thy rod,
Throw away thy wrath:
O my God,
Take the gentle path.
For my hearts desire
Unto thine is bent:
I aspire
To a full consent.
Not a word or look
I affect to own,
But by book,
And thy book alone.
Though I fail, I weep:
Though I halt in pace,
Yet I creep
To the throne of grace.
Then let wrath remove;
Love will do the deed:
For with love
Stonie hearts will bleed.
Love is swift of foot;
Love’s a man of warre,
And can shoot,
And can hit from farre.
Who can scape his bow?
That which wrought on thee,
Brought thee low,
Needs must work on me.
Throw away thy rod;
Though man frailties hath,
Thou art God:
Throw away thy wrath.
