MALA VAGGA – IMPURITIES

235-238

இப்போது நீ பழுத்துப்போன இலைபோல் ஆய்விட்டாய். யமதூதர் உன்னை அணுகுகிறார்கள்.

நீ இறந்து போகும் நிலையில் இருக்கிறாய். நீ செல்லும் வழிக்கு உணவு உன்னிடம் இல்லை.

You are now like a yellowed leaf. Already Yama's minions stand near. You stand at the door to departure but

have yet to provide for the journey.

ஆகவே உன்னைத் தீவு போல் (அரண்) செய்து கொள். ஊக்கமும் அறிவும் உடையவனாக இரு.

உன்னுடைய மாசுகள் நீங்கி, நீ பாவம் அற்றவனாய், ஒளியுடன் விளங்குகிற உயர்ந்த உலகத் திற்குச் செல்வாய்.

Make an island for yourself! Work quickly! Be wise! With impurities all blown away, unblemished, you'll reach the divine realm of the noble ones.

உன் வாழ்நாள் முடிந்துவிட்டது. யமனுடைய முன்னிலையில் நீ இருக்கிறாய். நீ செல்லும் வழியில் தங்க இடமும் உண்ண உணவும் இல்லை.

You are now right at the end of your time. You are headed to Yama's presence, with no place to rest along the way, but have yet to provide for the journey.

ஆகவே உன்னைத் தீவு போன்று (அரண்) செய்து கொள். ஊக்கமும் அறிவும் உடையவனாக இரு. உன்னுடைய மாசுகள் நீங்கி, நீ பாவம் அற்றவனாகிவிட்டால், பிறக்கவும் இறக்கவும் மாட்டாய்.

Make an island for yourself! Work quickly! Be wise! With impurities all blown away, unblemished, you won't again undergo birth and aging.

அறிவாளியானவர், தட்டான் வெள்ளியில் உள்ள களிம்பைப் போக்குவது போல, கணந்தோறும் சிறிது சிறிதாகத் தம்முடைய மாசுகளைப் போக்கிக் கொள்கிறார்.

Just as a silver smith step by step, bit by bit, moment to moment, blows away the impurities of molten silver — so the wise man, his own.

இரும்பினால் உண்டான துரு இரும்பையே அழித்து விடுவது போல, தீய நெறியில் செல்வோர் தம் தீய செயல்களினால் அழிக்கப்படுகிறார்.

Just as rust — iron's impurity — eats the very iron from which it is born, so the deeds of one who lives slovenly lead him on to a bad destination.

241-243

பாராயணம் செய்யாமலிருப்பது மந்திரத்திற்குக் குற்றமாகும். பழுது பார்க்காமலிருப்பது வீட்டிற்குக் குற்றம் ஆகும். சோம்பலானது அழகுக்குக் குற்றம் ஆகும். அசட்டைத்தனமாக இருப்பது காவலுக்குக் குற்றம் ஆகும்.

No recitation: the ruinous impurity of chants. No initiative: of a household. Indolence: of beauty. Heedlessness: of a guard.

ஒழுக்க ஈனமாக நடப்பது பெண்டிர்க்குக் குற்றம் ஆகும். பொருளில் பற்றுள்ளம் வைப்பது வள்ளலுக்குக் குற்றம் ஆகும். உண்மையாகவே, தீய கருமங்களைச் செய்வது இம்மைக்கும் மறுமைக்கும் குற்றம் ஆகும்.

In a woman, misconduct is an impurity. In a donor, stinginess. Evil deeds are the real impurities in this world and the next.

அழுக்கு (குற்றம்) களில் எல்லாம் அறியாமை என்னும் அழுக்கு மிகக்கொடியது. இது பெரிய குற்றம். பிக்குகளே! இந்த அழுக்கை நீக்குங்கள்; அழுக்கற்று இருங்கள்.

More impure than these impurities is the ultimate impurity: ignorance. Having abandoned this impurity, monks, you're impurity-free.

244-245

காக்கை போன்று வெட்கம் இல்லாமல், துணிவும் பழிச்சொல்லும் குற்றச்சொல்லும் உடைய ஒருவருக்கு இவ்வுலக வாழ்க்கை இன்பகரமாகக் காணப்படுகிறது.

Life's easy to live for someone unscrupulous, cunning as a crow, corrupt, back-biting, forward, and brash;

அமைதியும் நிதானமும், சுறுசுறுப்பும் தன்னடக்கமும் உடையவராய் எப்போதும் தூய்மையை நாடிக் கொண்டு தீமையற்றவராய் உள்ள ஞானிக்கு உலக வாழ்க்கை துன்பகரமாக இருக்கிறது.

But for someone who's constantly scrupulous, cautious, observant, sincere, pure in his livelihood, clean in his pursuits, it's hard.

246-248

உலகத்திலே, உயிரைக் கொல்கிறவரும், பொய் பேசுகிறவரும், திருடுகிறவரும், பிறன் மனைவியை விரும்புகிறவரும், மயக்கம் உண்டாக்குகிற குடிவகைகளைக் குடிக்கிறவரும், இவ்வுலகத்திலேயே தமது வேரைத் தாமே தோண்டிக் கொள்கிறார்கள். ஓ புருஷனே! இதைத் தெரிந்துக்கொள். அடக்கப்படாத தீய எண்ணங்கள் இப்படிப்பட்டவையே. ஆகவே, தீய நடத்தை களும் பேராசையும் உன்னைத் தீராத துக்கத்தில் இழுத்துச்செல்ல விடாதே.

Whoever kills, lies, steals, goes to someone else's wife, and is addicted to intoxicants, digs himself up by the root right here in this world. So know, my good man, that bad deeds are reckless. Don't let greed unrighteousness oppress you with long-term pain.

249-250

மக்கள் தங்கள் சக்திக்கும் பக்திக்கும் தக்கவாறு தானம் செய்கிறார்கள். ஒருவர் மற்றவருக்கு உணவும் பானமும் கொடுப்பதைக்கண்டு பொறாமைப் படுகிறவர், இரவிலும் பகலிலும் மனச் சாந்தி யடைய மாட்டார்.

People give in line with their faith, in line with conviction. Whoever gets flustered at food and drink given to others, attains no concentration by day or by night.

இந்தப் பொறாமையை அடியோடு பெயர்த்தெறிந்து முழுவதும் அழித்து விட்டவர்கள்,

இரவிலும் பகலிலும் மனச்சாந்தி (சமாதி) அடைகிறார்கள்.

But one in whom this is cut through up- rooted wiped out — attains concentration by day or by night.

காமத்தீ போன்று வேறு தீ இல்லை. பகைமையை போன்று வேறு உறுதியான பிடி இல்லை.

மோகவலை போன்று வேறு வலை இல்லை. ஆசை வெள்ளம் போன்று வேறு வெள்ளம் இல்லை.

There's no fire like passion, no seizure like anger, no snare like delusion, no river like craving.

252-253

பிறருடைய குற்றம் எளிதில் காணப்படுகிறது. ஆனால், தன்னுடைய குற்றத்தைக் காண்பது கடினமாக இருக்கிறது. பிறருடைய குற்றங்களைப் பதரைத் தூற்றுவது போன்று தூற்றுகிறவர்,

தந்திரமுள்ள சூதாடி தன் தோல்வியை மறைப்பதற்காகச் சூதுக் காயை ஒளிப்பது போலத் தன் சொந்தக் குற்றத்தை மறைக்கிறார்.

It's easy to see the errors of others, but hard to see your own. You winnow like chaff the errors of others, but conceal your own — like a cheat, an unlucky throw.

எப்போதும் பிறர் குற்றத்தைக்கண்டு குறை கூறுகிறவர்கள், தம்முடைய குற்றங்களை வளர விடுகிறார்கள். அவர்கள் தமது குற்றங்களை அழிக்க முடியாதவர்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள்.

If you focus on the errors of others, constantly finding fault, your effluents flourish. You're far from their ending.

254-255

ஆகாயத்திலே பாதைகள் இல்லை. வேறு சமயத்தில், (உண்மையான) துறவிகள் இல்லை.

மக்கள், உலகத்திலே இச்சைகளை வளர்க்கிறார்கள். ததாகதர்(புத்தர்)கள் இச்சைகளை வளர்ப்ப தில்லை. வானத்தில் பாதைகள் இல்லை. வேறு சமயத்தில், (உண்மையான) துறவிகள் இல்லை. நிலை நிற்கும் படியான பொருள் உலகத்தில் ஒன்றும் இல்லை.

There's no trail in space, no outside contemplative. People are smitten with complications, but devoid of complication are the Tathagatas. There's no trail in space, no outside contemplative, no eternal fabrications, no wavering in the Awakened.
