முனிவர் என்று கூறப்படுபவர்

இந்த உலகில் இருப்பதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது

- எவ்வழியில் அவர்கள் முனிவராவார்கள்?

ஒருவரை முனிவர் என்று கூறுவது

அவர் பெற்ற அறிவின் காரணமாகவா

அல்லது அவர் நடந்து கொள்ளும்

வாழ்க்கை முறையின் காரணமாகவா?

[Nanda:]

There are in the world

sages, they say

— in what way?

Do they call one a sage

for possessing knowledge

or possessing a way of life?

[புத்தர்:]

கருத்துக்களின் காரணமாகவோ,

கல்வி (மரபு வழி) அல்லது அறிவின்

காரணமாகவோ,

சான்றோர் ஒருவரை முனிவர் என்று கூறுவதில்லை, நந்தா.

தனிமையில்,

ஏக்கமில்லாதவாறு,

மனச்சஞ்சலமில்லாமல் வாழ்பவர்:

அவரையே நான் முனிவர் என்கிறேன்.

[The Buddha:]

Not on account of his views,

learning,

or knowledge

do the skilled here, Nanda,

call one a sage.

Those who live

disarmed,

undesiring,

untroubled:

those, I say, are called sages.

கருத்துக்கள் மற்றும் கல்வி சம்பந்தப் பட்டது என்றும்,

தூய்மையை

ஒழுக்கவிதிகள் மற்றும் பயிற்சி சம்பந்தப் பட்டது என்றும்

தூய்மையை

மற்ற கணக்கற்ற வழிகளில் விவரிக்கும் பிராமணர்களும், துறவிகளும்:

அவர்கள் இவ்வாறு விவரித்தபடி வாழ்வதன் காரணமாகப் பிறப்பையும், மூப்பையும் கடந்து சென்றவர்களா?

நான் கேட்கிறேன் பகவரே,

தயவு கூர்ந்து பதில் தரவும்.

Whatever brahmans and contemplatives

describe purity

in terms of views and learning,

describe purity

in terms of precepts and practices,

describe purity

in terms of manifold ways:

have they, dear sir, living there in that way,

crossed over birth and aging?

I ask you, O Blessed One.

Please tell me.

தூய்மையைக்

கருத்துக்கள் மற்றும் கல்வி சம்பந்தப்பட்டது என்றும்,

தூய்மையை

ஒழுக்கவிதிகள் மற்றும் பயிற்சி சம்பந்தப் பட்டது என்றும்,

தூய்மையை

மற்ற கணக்கற்ற வழிகளில் விவரிக்கும் பிராமணர்களும், துறவிகளும்:

அவர்களுள் எவரும் இவ்வாறு விவரித்தபடி வாழ்வதன் காரணமாகப்

பிறப்பையும், மூப்பையும் கடந்து செல்லவில்லை என்கிறேன்.

none of them, living there in that way,

I tell you, have crossed over birth and aging.

கருத்துக்கள் மற்றும் கல்வி சம்பந்தப்பட்டது என்றும்,

தூய்மையை

ஒழுக்கவிதிகள் மற்றும் பயிற்சி சம்பந்தப்பட்டது என்றும்,

தூய்மையை

மற்ற கணக்கற்ற வழிகளில் விவரிக்கும் பிராமணர்களும், துறவிகளும்:

முனிவரே, அவர்கள் நீங்கள் கூறுவதுபோல வெள்ளத்தைக் கடக்கவில்லையென்றால்,

பின் தேவரும், மனிதரும் வாழும் இவ்வுலகில்

பிறப்பையும், மூப்பையும் யார் தான் கடக்கின்றனர்?

Whatever brahmans and contemplatives

describe purity

in terms of views and learning,

describe purity

in terms of precepts and practices,

describe purity

in terms of manifold ways:

if, sage, as you say,

they've not crossed over the flood,

then who in the world

of beings divine and human

has crossed over birth and aging?

I ask you, O Blessed One.

Please tell me.

[புத்தர்:]

நான் எல்லாப் பிராமணர்களும் துறவிகளும்

பிறப்பினாலும், மூப்பினாலும் சூழப்பட்டவர்கள்

என்று சொல்லவில்லை.

இங்குள்ளவர்களுள் எவரெல்லாம்

கண்டதை, கேட்டதை, உணர்ந்ததை,

ஒழுக்கவிதிகளை மற்றும் பயிற்சிகளைக்

கைவிட்டனரோ

- அவர்கள் அனைவரும் -

வேட்கையை அறிந்தவர்கள்,

மாசற்றவர்கள்:

அவர்களைத் தான்

நான் வெள்ளத்தைத் தாண்டியவர்கள் என்கிறேன்.

[The Buddha:]

I don't say that all brahmans and contemplatives

are shrouded in birth and aging.

Those here who've abandoned

what's seen, heard, and sensed,

precepts and practices

— all —

who've abandoned their manifold ways

— again, all —

who, comprehending craving,

are effluent-free:

they are the ones, I tell you,

who've crossed over the flood.

[நந்தர்:]

கோதமரே, மாமுனிவரின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு நான் மகிழ்கிறேன்!

பற்றிலிருந்து விடுபடுவதைப் பற்றி நன்கு விளக்கியுள்ளீர்கள்.

இங்குள்ளவர்களுள் எவரெல்லாம்

கண்டதை, கேட்டதை, உணர்ந்ததை,

ஒழுக்கவிதிகளை மற்றும் பயிற்சிகளை

கைவிட்டனரோ

- அவர்கள் அனைவரும் -

அவர்களது எண்ணற்ற வழிகளைக் கைவிட்டவர் அனைவரும்,

- மீண்டும் கூறுகிறேன், அனைவரும் -

வேட்கையை அறிந்தவர்கள்,

மாசற்றவர்கள்:

நானும் அவர்கள் வெள்ளத்தைத் தாண்டியவர்கள் என்றே கூறுகிறேன்.

I relish, Gotama, the Great Seer's words

well-expounded, without acquisition.

Those here who've abandoned

what's seen, heard, and sensed,

precepts and practices

— all —

who've abandoned their manifold ways

— again, all —

who, comprehending craving,

are effluent-free:

I, too, say they've crossed over the flood.
