Khaggavisana Sutta: A Rhinoceros

Renouncing violence

for all living beings,

harming not even a one,

you would not wish for offspring,

so how a companion?

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

எல்லா உயிர்களிடத்தும்

வன்முறையைக் கைவிட்டு,

எந்த ஓர் உயிருக்கும் தீமை செய்யாத நீங்கள்,

உங்கள் மக்களுக்குத் தீமை செய்ய மாட்டீர்களல்லவா,

பின் தோழனுக்கு மட்டும் ஏன்?

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

For a sociable person

there are allurements;

on the heels of allurement, this pain.

Seeing allurement's drawback,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

அனைவரிடமும் கூடிப்பழகுகிற ஒருவனை

வசீகரிக்கக் கவர்ச்சிப் பொருட்கள் பல உள்ளன;

அந்த கவர்ச்சியினால் வருவதே, இந்தத் துன்பம்.

கவர்ச்சியின் குறைபாட்டைக் கவனித்து,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

One whose mind

is enmeshed in sympathy

for friends & companions,

neglects the true goal.

Seeing this danger in intimacy,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

நண்பருக்கும், தோழருக்கும்

உள்ள பாசப்பிணைப்பில்

சிக்கிய மனம்,

உண்மையான நோக்கத்தை

அலட்சியப் படுத்துகிறது.

இந்த பாசத்தில் உள்ள

அபாயத்தைக் கண்டு,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Like spreading bamboo,

entwined,

is concern for offspring & spouses.

Like a bamboo sprout,

unentangling,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

பரந்து வளரும் மூங்கில் காட்டில்

மூங்கில் பின்னி இருப்பதைப் போன்றதே,

தனது மக்கள் மீதும் துணைவர் மீதும்

உள்ள கவலை.

மூங்கில் தளிர், சிக்கலில்

சிக்காமல் இருப்பது போல,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

As a deer in the wilds,

unfettered,

goes for forage wherever it wants:

the wise person, valuing freedom,

wanders alone

like a rhinoceros.

வனத்தில் வாழும் மான்,

கட்டுப்படாமல் திரிந்து,

நினைத்தபோதெல்லாம் தீனி தேடிச் செல்கிறது:

அறிவாளி, சுதந்திரத்தை மதிப்பவன்,

தனித்து நடமாடுகிறான்

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

In the midst of companions

— when staying at home,

when going out wandering —

you are prey to requests.

Valuing the freedom

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

தோழர்கள் மத்தியில்

- வீட்டில் இருப்பினும் சரி,

வெளியில் நடமாடினும் சரி --

அவர்கள் வேண்டுகோள்களுக்கு

நீங்கள் இரையாவீர்கள்.

சுதந்திரத்தை மதித்து

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

There is sporting & love

in the midst of companions,

& abundant fondness for offspring.

Feeling disgust

at the prospect of parting

from those who'd be dear,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

தோழர்கள் மத்தியில்

விளையாட்டும் நேசமும் உள்ளது,

மக்கள் மீதான அளப்பரிய பாசமும் உள்ளது,

நெருங்கியவர்களை விட்டுப்

பிரிவதை நினைத்தாலே

வெறுப்புத் தோன்றுகிறது,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Without resistance in all four directions,

content with whatever you get,

enduring troubles with no dismay,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

நான்கு திசைகளிலிருந்தும்

எதிர்ப்பு இல்லாமல்,

கிடைப்பதைக் கொண்டு

திருப்தி அடைந்து,

பிரச்சனைகளைப் பீதியடையாமல்

தாங்கிக் கொண்டு,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

They are hard to please,

some of those gone forth,

as well as those living the household life.

Shedding concern

for these offspring of others,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

அனைவரையும் திருப்திப் படுத்துவது கடினம்,

சிலர் துறவறம் பூண்டவர்

மற்றவர் இல்லறத்தார்.

மற்றவர் மக்களான இவர்களுக்காகக்

கவலைப் படுவதைக் கைவிட்டுத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Cutting off the householder's marks,[Hair and beard]

like a kovilara tree

that has shed its leaves,

the prudent one, cutting all household ties,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

இல்லறத்தார் அடையாளங்களைக் களைந்து [தலைமுடி தாடி போன்றவற்றை]

இலைகள் உதிர்ந்த

மந்தாரை மரம் போன்று,

விவேகம் உள்ளவன்,

இல்லறப் பிணைப்புகளை அறுத்துத்

தனித்து நடமாடுகிறான்

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

If you gain a mature companion,

a fellow traveler, right-living & wise,

overcoming all dangers

go with him, gratified,

mindful.

If you don't gain a mature companion,

a fellow traveler, right-living & wise,

wander alone

like a king renouncing his kingdom,

like the elephant in the Matanga wilds,

his herd.

We praise companionship

— yes!

Those on a par, or better,

should be chosen as friends.

If they're not to be found,

living faultlessly,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

விவேகமான தோழன் கிடைத்தால்,

கூடப் பயணம் செய்பவர், சரியாக வாழ்பவன்,

மெய்ஞ்ஞானம் உள்ளவன் கிடைத்தால்,

எல்லா அபாயங்களையும் கடந்து

அவனோடு செல்லுங்கள், மனத்திருப்தியோடு,

கடைப்பிடியோடு (கவனத்தோடு).

விவேகமான தோழன் கிடைக்காவிட்டால்,

கூட பயணம் செய்பவன், சரியாக வாழ்பவன்,

மெய்ஞானம் உள்ளவன் கிடைக்காவிட்டால்,

தனித்து நடமாடுங்கள்

தன் இராஜ்ஜியத்தை விட்டுக் கொடுத்த மன்னனைப்போல,

மாதங்க வனத்தில் தன் கூட்டத்தை விட்டுச்சென்ற

யானையைப் போல.

நாங்கள் தோழமையைப் பாராட்டுகிறோம்

- ஆம்!

சமமான தோழர்களை அல்லது மேலானவர்களை

நண்பராகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்க வேண்டும்.

அப்படிபட்டோர் கிடைக்கவில்லையென்றால்,

குறையில்லாமல் வாழ்ந்து,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Seeing radiant bracelets of gold,

well-made by a smith,

clinking, clashing,

two on an arm,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros,

[thinking:]

"In the same way,

if I were to live with another,

there would be careless talk or abusive."

Seeing this future danger,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

பொற்கொல்லனால் நுட்பமாகச் செய்யப்பட்ட

ஒளிவீசும் தங்கக் கடகங்கள்

ஒவ்வொரு கையிலும் இரண்டிரண்டு,

கிலுங்கிக்கொண்டும் மோதிக்கொண்டும்

உள்ளதைப் பார்த்து

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

[இவ்வாறு நினைத்தபடி:]

"அது போலவே

இன்னொருவருடன் கூடி வாழ்ந்தால்,

விதண்டைப் பேச்சும், நிந்தனைப் பேச்சும் இருக்கும்."

இந்த வரப்போகும் ஆபத்தை உணர்ந்து

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Because sensual pleasures,

elegant, honeyed, & charming,

bewitch the mind with their manifold forms —

seeing this drawback in sensual strands —

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

புலன் இன்பங்கள்

அழகியதாகவும், தேன்சுவை கொண்டதாகவும், கவர்ச்சியுடையதாகவும்

இருந்து மனத்தைப் பல வடிவங்களிலும் மயக்கி விடுவதால் -

இந்தப் புலன் இன்பங்களின்

குறைபாடுகளைக் கவனித்துத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

"Calamity, tumor, misfortune,

disease, an arrow, a danger for me."

Seeing this danger in sensual strands,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

"பேரிடர், வீக்கம், இடையூறு,

நோய், ஓர் அம்பு, எனக்கு ஆபத்து."

இவ்வாறு புலன் இன்பங்களின்

ஆபத்தைக் கவனித்துத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Cold & heat, hunger & thirst,

wind & sun, horseflies & snakes:

enduring all these, without exception,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

குளிரும் வெப்பமும், பசியும் தாகமும்,

காற்றும் கதிரவனும், உண்ணிகளும் அறவைகளும்:

இவற்றை எல்லாம் பொருட்படுத்தித்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

As a great white elephant,

with massive shoulders,

renouncing his herd,

lives in the wilds wherever he wants,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

பிரமாண்டமான தோள்களுடைய

ஒரு பெரும் வெள்ளை யானை

அதன் கூட்டத்தைத் துறந்து எப்படிக்

காட்டுப்பகுதிகளில் தான் விரும்பும் இடத்தில் வாழ்கிறதோ, அதே போலத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

"There's no way

that one delighting in company

can touch even momentary release."

Heeding the Solar Kinsman's words,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

"கூட்டத்தில் பெரு மகிழ்ச்சி காண்பவன்

ஒரு போதும் தற்காலிக விடுதலையைக்

கூடத் தொட முடியாது."

சூரிய வம்சத்து உறவினன்

இவ்வாறு கூறியதை நினைவில் வைத்துத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Transcending the contortion of views,

the sure way attained,

the path gained,

[realizing:]

"Unled by others,

I have knowledge arisen,"

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

கருத்து திரிபுகளை எல்லாம் கடந்து சென்று,

சிறந்த வழியை அடைந்து,

மார்க்கத்தைப் பெற்று,

[இவ்வாறு அறிந்து:]

"பிறர் வழிகாட்டாமல்,

எனக்குள் அறிவு எழுந்துள்ளது,"

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

With no greed, no deceit,

no thirst, no hypocrisy —

delusion & blemishes

blown away —

with no inclinations for all the world,

every world,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

அவா இல்லாமல், வஞ்சனை இல்லாமல்,

தாகம் இல்லாமல், கபடம் இல்லாமல் -

மயக்கமும் குறைபாடுகளும்

அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டன -

உலகத்தால் ஈர்க்கப்படாமல்,

எவ்வுலகத்தாலும் ஈர்க்கப்படாமல்,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Avoid the evil companion

disregarding the goal,

intent on the out-of-tune way.

Don't take as a friend

someone heedless & hankering.

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

தீய தோழனைத் தவிர்

நோக்கத்தைக் கைவிட்டவன்,

தவறான பாதையில் செல்லத் துடிப்பவன்,

அக்கறை இல்லாத பேராசை கொண்டவனை

நண்பனாகக் கொள்ளாதே.

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Consort with one who is learned,

who maintains the Dhamma,

a great & quick-witted friend.

Knowing the meanings,

subdue your perplexity,

[then] wander alone

like a rhinoceros,

கற்றவனோடு சேர்ந்து கொள்

அவன் அறத்தைக் காப்பவன்

சிறந்த கூர்மையான அறிவு உடைய நண்பன்.

பொருள் தெரிந்து கொண்டு

குழப்பத்தை அடக்கு, [பின்]

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Free from longing, finding no pleasure

in the world's sport, love, or sensual bliss,

abstaining from adornment,

speaking the truth,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

ஏக்கத்திலிருந்து விடுபட்டு, உலக விளையாட்டிலும் அல்லது

காதலிலும் அல்லது புலன் இன்பங்களிலும் இன்பம் காணாமல்,

அலங்காரம் செய்துகொள்வதைத் தவிர்த்து,

உண்மையை பேசித்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Abandoning offspring, spouse,

father, mother,

riches, grain, relatives,

& sensual pleasures

altogether,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

மக்களை, துணையை,

தந்தையை, தாயை,

செல்வத்தை, தானிய மணியை, உறவை,

புலன் இன்பங்களை எல்லாம்

முழுமையாகத் துறந்து,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

"This is a bondage, a baited hook.

There's little happiness here,

next to no satisfaction,

all the more suffering & pain."

Knowing this, circumspect,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

"இது ஒரு கட்டு, இரையுள்ள தூண்டில்.

இங்கு இன்பம் குறைவு,

கொஞ்சமும் திருப்தி இல்லை,

துக்கமும் துன்பமுமே அதிகம்."

இதை அறிந்து, எச்சரிக்கையோடு இருந்து

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Shattering fetters,

like a fish in the water tearing a net,

like a fire not coming back to what's burnt,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

கட்டும் சங்கிலிகளை உடைத்தெரிந்து,

வலையில் சிக்கிய மீன் வலையைக்

கிழிக்க முயல்வதுபோல,

எரிந்துபோன கட்டையில்

மீண்டும் நெருப்புப் பற்றாதது போலத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Eyes downcast, not footloose,

senses guarded, with protected mind,

not oozing — not burning — with lust,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

கண்களைக் கீழ்நோக்கி,

கண்ட இடத்தில் அலைய விடாமல்,

புலன்களைக் கவனித்தவாறு,

பாதுகாக்கப்பட்ட மனத்துடன்,

காமத்தோடு கசியாமல் - எரியாமல் -

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Taking off the householder's marks,[Lay clothing]

like a coral tree

that has shed its leaves,

going forth in the ochre robe,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

இல்லறத்தார் அடையாளங்களைக் களைந்து [இல்லறத்தார் அணியும் ஆடைகள்]

இலைகள் உதிர்ந்த

முருக்கு மரம் போன்று,

காவி ஆடை அணிந்து

துறவறம் பூண்டு,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Showing no greed for flavors, not careless,

going from house to house for alms,

with mind unenmeshed in this family or that,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

சுவைக்கு ஆசைப்படாமல், அதேசமயம் அக்கறையின்றியுமிராமல்,

வீடு வீடாக உணவு கேட்டு,

எந்தக் குடும்பத்தோடும் மனம் பற்றுக் கொள்ளாமல்,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Abandoning barriers to awareness,

expelling all defilements — all —

non-dependent, cutting aversion,

allurement,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

தெளிவுக்குத் தடங்கலாக

உள்ளவற்றை உதறிவிட்டு

மாசுகளையெல்லாம் களைந்தெறிந்து - அனைத்தையும் -

எதையும் சார்ந்திராமல்,

வெறுப்பை வெட்டியெறிந்து,

கவர்ச்சிப் பொருட்களைக் கைவிட்டுத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Turning your back on pleasure & pain,

as earlier with sorrow & joy,

attaining pure equanimity,

tranquillity,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

இன்ப துன்பத்துக்கு விடைகொடுத்து,

முன்பு மகிழ்ச்சி துக்கங்களுக்கு விடைகொடுத்ததைப்போல,

தூய மனநிதானத்தை அடைந்து,

அமைதி பெற்று

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

With persistence aroused

for the highest goal's attainment,

with mind unsmeared, not lazy in action,

firm in effort, with steadfastness & strength arisen,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

விடாப்பிடியாகத் தொடர்வதை ஊக்குவித்து

மேலான நோக்கத்தை அடைவதற்கு

மனம் அலுக்காமல்,

நடத்தையில் சோம்பலின்றி,

முயற்சியில் கண்டிப்புடன்,

உறுதியும் சக்தியும் தோன்றத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Not neglecting seclusion, absorption,

constantly living the Dhamma

in line with the Dhamma,

comprehending the danger

in states of becoming,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

தனிமை, ஈடுபாடு ஆகியவற்றை

மறந்து விடாமல்

தொடர்ந்து அறநெறியில் வாழ்ந்து

அறவழி நடந்து,

பவத்தோற்றங்களின் ஆபத்தை

அறிந்து கொண்டு

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Intent on the ending of craving & heedful,

learned, mindful, not muddled,

certain — having reckoned the Dhamma —

& striving,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

வேட்கையை முடிக்கும் ஒரே நோக்கத்தோடு,

விவேகத்துடன், கற்று, கடைப்பிடித்து,

குழப்பமடையாமல், உறுதியாக

- அறத்தைக் கவனித்து - முயன்று

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Unstartled, like a lion at sounds.

Unsnared, like the wind in a net.

Unsmeared, like a lotus in water:

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

எதற்கும் அதிர்ச்சி அடையாமல், சத்தங்களைக் கேட்ட சிங்கத்தைப்போல

எதற்கும் பிடிபடாமல், வலையில் சிக்காத காற்றைப்போல,

கறைபடாமல், [சேற்று] நீரில் உள்ள தாமரையைப்போலத்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Like a lion — forceful, strong in fang,

living as a conqueror, the king of beasts —

resort to a solitary dwelling.

Wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

மிருகங்களின் ராஜா - சிங்கம் - உறுதியாக, பலமான நீண்ட பற்களுடன்,

எல்லா விலங்குகளையும் வெற்றிகொண்டு வாழ்கிறது,

அது போலப் பயிற்சி செய்து வெற்றிகொண்டு,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

At the right time consorting

with the release through good will,

compassion,

appreciation,

equanimity,

unobstructed by all the world,

any world,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

சரியான நேரத்தில்,

மைத்திரி,

கருணை,

முதிதை,

நிதானம் ஆகியவற்றுடன்

உலகால் தடுக்கப்படாமல்,

எந்த உலகாலும் தடுக்கப்படாமல்,

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

Having let go of passion,

aversion,

delusion;

having shattered the fetters;

undisturbed at the ending of life,

wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

அவாவை,

வெறுப்பை,

அறியாமையை விட்டு விட்டதால்

கட்டிய சங்கிலிகளை நொறுக்கி விட்டதால்;

வாழ்வின் முடிவிலும் கலங்காமல்

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.

People follow & associate

for a motive.

Friends without a motive these days

are rare.

They're shrewd for their own ends, & impure.

Wander alone

like a rhinoceros.

மக்கள் தொடர்வதும், சேர்வதும்

காரணத்தோடு தான்.

காரணம் இல்லாமல் இக்காலத்தில் நட்பு கொள்வோர் மிகச்சிலரே.

தங்கள் தேவைகளை அடையத் தந்திரமாக

நடந்து கொள்வார்கள், தூய்மையற்றோர். [எனவே]

தனித்து நடமாடு

காண்டாமிருகத்தைப் போல.
