"ஒருவர் தன்னைச் சில கருத்துக்களோடு பிணைத்துக் கொள்பவர், அக்கருத்துகள் ஒப்பற்றவை என்றும், உலகில் தலை சிறந்தவை என்றும் கருதுபவர், அதன் காரணமாக மற்றக் கருத்துக்களைத் தாழ்ந்தவையாகக் கருதுகிறார். எனவே அதற்கு மாறான கருத்துள்ளவர்களோடு சச்சரவு செய்வதிலிருந்து தப்ப முடிவதில்லை. பார்த்தது, கேட்டது, அறிந்தது, சடங்குகள் செய்வது ஆகியவற்றில் அவர் தனக்கு இலாபம் இருப்பதாக நினைக்கின்றார். இத்தகைய கருத்துக்களினாலேயே பிற கருத்துக்கள் மதிப்பற்றவை என்றும் கருதுகிறார்.

"A person who associates himself with certain views, considering them as best and making them supreme in the world, he says, because of that, that all other views are inferior; therefore he is not free from contention (with others). In what is seen, heard, cognized and in ritual observances performed, he sees a profit for himself. Just by laying hold of that view he regards every other view as worthless.

ஆனால் திறமையானவர்கள் (நியதியில்) [1] ஒரு கருத்தோடு இணைந்து கொண்டால், மற்ற கருத்துக்கள் கீழானவை என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுவதால், அதுவே ஒரு சுமையாகி விடும் என்று கூறுகின்றனர். எனவே ஒரு பிக்கு பார்த்ததை, கேட்டதை, அறிந்ததை, சடங்குகள் செய்வதை நம்பியிருக்கக் கூடாது. அவர் தன்னை மற்றவருக்குச் சமமானவர் என்றோ அல்லது தான் அவரினும் தாழ்மையானவர் என்றோ அல்லது மேன்மையானவர் என்றோ நினைக்கக் கூடாது. முன்பு கொண்டிருந்த கருத்துக்களைக் கைவிட்டு, [2] புதிய கருத்துகளோடு இணைந்து கொள்ளாமல் அவர் எதற்கும் ஆதரவு தேடுவதில்லை, அறிவு உட்பட. சச்சரவு செய்வோர் மத்தியில் ஒருசாராரோடு பிணைத்துக் கொள்வதுமில்லை. அவர் சிக்கலான சூழ்நிலையிலும் எந்த ஒரு கருத்தின்மீதும் பற்றுக் கொள்வதில்லை. ஆவது அல்லது அழிவது, இப்பிறப்பு அல்லது மறு பிறப்பு - என்ற இரு எல்லைகளையும் தொட விருப்பம் இல்லாதவர். அப்படிபட்டவருக்கு மற்றவர் உண்மை என்று ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட போதனைகளை ஆராயக் குறிப்பிட்ட கருத்து எதுவும் இருப்பதில்லை. பார்த்தவற்றின் மீதும், கேட்டவற்றின் மீதும், அறிந்தவற்றின் மீதும் அவர் எந்தக் கருத்தையும் இணைத்துக் கொள்வதில்லை. எந்தக் கருத்தோடும் பற்றுக் கொள்ளாத அப்படிப்பட்ட பிராமணனை [3] உலகில் எதைச் சார்ந்திருப்பதாகக் கூறமுடியும்?

Those skilled (in judgment)[1] say that (a view becomes) a bond if, relying on it, one regards everything else as inferior. Therefore a bhikkhu should not depend on what is seen, heard or cognized, nor upon ritual observances. He should not present himself as equal to, nor imagine himself to be inferior, nor better than, another. Abandoning (the views) he had (previously) held and not taking up (another), he does not seek a support even in knowledge. Among those who dispute he is certainly not one to take sides. He does not [have] recourse to a view at all. In whom there is no inclination to either extreme, for becoming or non-becoming, here or in another existence, for him there does not exist a fixed viewpoint on investigating the doctrines assumed (by others). Concerning the seen, the heard and the cognized he does not form the least notion. That brahmana[3] who does not grasp at a view, with what could he be identified in the world?

"அவர்கள் (எந்தக் கொள்கையையும்) ஊகிப்பதும் இல்லை, அவற்றைத் தொடர்வதும் இல்லை; கோட்பாடுகளை அவர்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வதும் இல்லை. கருத்துக்களுக்கு அப்பால் சென்ற ஒரு (உண்மையான) பிராமணன் மீண்டும் பின் வாங்குவதில்லை (கருத்துக்களோடு பற்றுக் கொள்வதில்லை).

"They do not speculate nor pursue (any notion); doctrines are not accepted by them. A (true) brahmana is beyond, does not fall back on views."
