Incidentally - that's the same director, Nghiem-Minh Nguyen-Vo (Nguyễn Võ Nghiêm Minh) who just held that film screening for his new(er) film Nước 2030 with Erik Harms at Yale, so he's a friend of the VSG and might know a thing or two about Sơn Nam. Perhaps Erik can put you in contact.

Fun project, Seb!

I'm no expert on Sơn Nam either, but one other connection that's accessible to an English-speaking audience is the recent(ish) film Buffalo Boy (Mùa len trâu) by director Nguyễn Võ Nghiêm Minh, which is based on the story of the same name from the collection Hương rừng Cà Mau. Someone's uploaded the text of the story here: https://vnthuquan.net/truyen/truyen.aspx?tid=2qtqv3m3237nmn3nvn31n343tq83a3q3m3237nvn&cochu=&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1#phandau

Hi Seb,

I translated one of his short stories into English for Mekong Review a few years ago. He has a multi volume memoir, the first volume of which can be read here.

A very interesting figure. He has also written a number of important popular histories of the region that have been important sources for English language scholars, particularly on millenarianism.

Best,

Anthony

Hi folks,

I'm doing some preliminary research for a new side-project about the author Sơn Nam, who I understand is a significant literary figure from the Mekong Delta region. Apart from that, I don't know very much and this is not really my field of expertise...

Can anyone please recommend some places for me to start learning more about Sơn Nam and his work? Vietnamese-language sources welcome, I presume none of his work has been translated into English?

Thanks in advance!
