anh Frank Proschan's ground-breaking work remains essential references on the topic from both a historical and anthropological perspective:

Proschan, Frank. “Eunuch Mandarins, Soldats Memzelles, Effeminate Boys and Graceless Women: French Colonial Constructions of Vietnamese Genders.” GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies 8.4 (2002): 435-67.

Proschan, Frank. “Syphilis, Opiomania, and Pederasty: Colonial Construction of Vietnamese (and French) Social Diseases.” Journal of the History of Sexuality 11.4 (2002): 610-36.

and another article under a pseudonym:

Dear Dat Nguyen,

Two articles by Frank Proschan from a French perspective (if memory serves).

They should be stored on the VSG database of past postings.

Good luck!

Dear Dat Nguyen,

Unfortunately much of what has been written has focused on the issue of HIV/AIDS. I am currently involved in a research project looking at homosexuality and recognition in the Vietnamese context, but we have not yet published our findings. Here are a number of texts that may be useful for you:

Newton, Natalie Nancy. 2012. “A Queer Political Economy of ‘Community’: Gender, Space, and the Transnational Politics of Community for Vietnamese Lesbians (les) in Saigon.” PhD diss., University of California.

Khuat, Thu Hong, Le Bach Duong, and Nguyen Ngoc Huong. 2009. Sexuality in Contemporary Vietnam: Easy to Joke About but Hard to Talk About. Hanoi: Knowledge Publishing House.

Blanc, Marie-Eve. 2005. “Social Construction of Male Homosexualities in Vietnam. Some Keys to Understanding Discrimination and Implications for HIV Prevention Strategy.” International Social Science Journal 57 (186): 661-673. doi: 10.1111/j.1468-2451.2005.583.x.

Pastoetter, Jakob. 2004. “Vietnam.” In The Continuum Complete International Encyclopedia of Sexuality, edited by Robert T. Francoeur and Raymond J. Noonan, 1337-1362. New York: Continuum.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Dear all,

I was wondering if you could help me locate some historical or anthropological research, books, or articles on homosexuality in Vietnam. I am looking for something besides research on HIV/AIDS in the Vietnamese homosexual community.

Thank you for all your help.

Sincerely,

Dat Nguyen
