Subject: [Vsg] Information on Cho Lon Request
Hi all,
This is my first ever message to the mailing list, so forgive me if this
is the incorrect place to ask my question.
My name is Philip Moore and I am an undergraduate Asian Studies major at
Rice University (Dec. '06), located in Houston, Texas. While my primary
focus (and love, I must say) is Viet Nam, I have had to take a good deal
of classes on China, one of which is the Chinese Diaspora this spring
semester.
I have chosen to write a mini-research essay on the Chinese presence in
Cho Lon, Sai Gon (TPHCM if you like), and I am in dire need of good
sources of information. Vietnamese sources of information would be
fine; English sources would be fine as well. I am looking for
information about the history of Chinese migration into Cho Lon, and how
Doi Moi (New Renovation - 1986) might have influenced the dynamic in Cho
Lon. I have indeed been to Quan 5/Cho Lon several times, but never
really explored the history of the place. I was too engulfed in the
sights and sounds.
If any of you could provide me with sources of info that you've either
written or read, please contact me at philm@rice.edu. Thanks a bunch.
