The poet/ writer Thanh Tam Tuyen passed away yesterday, March 22, 2006, in
Saint Paul, Minnesota. His first book of poetry, “Toi Khong Con Co Doc”,
[I’m no longer isolated] published in 1956, has forever changed the face of
contemporary Vietnamese poetry. Thanh Tam Tuyen is the author of many other
collections of poems, short stories, and novels. The most influential,
talented, and famous writer in South Vietnam, after 1975, Thanh Tham Tuyen
was sent to re-education camp for seven years. He later came to the U.S.
and lived a very quiet life in Minesota, avoiding all public appearances.
Thanh Tam Tuyen is deeply admired by generations of Vietnamese writers, his
impact on the nation’s literature is enormous. The “governmental”
literature in Vietnam, up to this date, still refuses to mention Thanh Tam
Tuyen.

Dear anh Hao,
With a geat deal of sadness that I read the news about Thanh Tam Tuyen.
And I am so glad you mentioned in your post the lack of attention given
to the artistic legacy of writers, musicians and artists living in the
South.
Someone should begin a serious scholarly attempt to make accessible to
the reading public, at least the most important, enjoyable and germinal
works, of these writers . How about a series titled 'Voices From The South'?
