subject [Vsg] Question on Hajj in Viet Nam

Colleagues,

I have been approached with a question about the scope, prevalence and

history of the Hajj in Viet Nam. Can the combined expertise of this

list please help with these questions?

* sources on the history of the Hajj in Viet Nam (and fluctuation over

time)

* possible ethnic/regional specificities within Viet Nam

* possible networks linking Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian/East

Asian Hajjis

* ways of identifying, approaching and interviewing contemporary

communities of Vietnamese Hajjis

* possible academic contacts in (or outside) Viet Nam working on these

issues

Thank you in advance for your input,

Christoph Giebel

Christoph,

Eric Tagliacozzo at Cornell has been working on Southeast Asians and

the hajj -- so I'd ask him. another possibility -- Anna Gade (Oberlin)

who was working with Muslim Chams in Cambodia. . . she is a scholar of

Islam, did earlier work on Indonesia. . .

Subject: [Vsg] Question on Hajj in Viet Nam

Dear colleagues,

As Brad Davis already indicated, I am currently working on a PhD at the VU University Amsterdam regarding a community of descendants of Muslim immigrants from Bawean island in the Java Sea. I have looked into this subject of the hajj among Cham and Bawean Muslims as well, and followed groups of hajjis on their way to Mecca.

* sources on the history of the Hajj in Viet Nam (and fluctuation over time)

Very few secondary Vietnamese sources exist on this subject but certain state institutions keep track on numbers of people going on this pilgrimage.

* possible ethnic/regional specificities within Viet Nam

My experiences stretch from Hanoi to Chau Doc and HCM City, and beyond. There are geographic and ethnic differences in the organisation of the hajj in Vietnam, and competition between various groups for resources.

* ways of identifying, approaching and interviewing contemporary communities of Vietnamese Hajjis

I have done fieldwork among Hajji’s and Hajja’s of the Cham communities in Chau Doc, HCM City and descendants of Bawean immigrants and have encountered some Kinh who help Muslims plan for the pilgrimage. A paper on this theme should be published this year or next.

* possible networks linking Vietnamese and other Southeast Asian/East Asian Hajjis

I have travelled along with Vietnamese Cham hajj tour operators to other countries in Southeast Asia and mapped some of the transnational endeavours connected to the pilgrimage. These days there are several hajj tour operators that successfully compete with the officially sanctioned institutions in Vietnam. Money or free tickets for these pilgrimages are often provided for by outside sponsors, generating competition, sometimes conflict and corruption. I devote a chapter on this in the dissertation that I am writing now.

* possible academic contacts in (or outside) Viet Nam working on these issues

I know of some capable young Vietnamese researchers in HCM City who are developing an interest in this and related subjects. Their contacts might provide a possible way in.
