"Western" Doctors in the 1960s

I have been quoting a now-lost source that there were approximately 800 Vietnamese doctors trained in “Western” methods in a population of approximately 15 to 20 million in the RVN during the 1960s and the “American War”. I need to find out where exactly is information of the number of “Western” physicians in all of Viet Nam during that time period. Any ideas or suggestions will be welcome.

Thanks…Rob Whitehurst

For the north, is this the kind of information that Nguyen Khac Vien and his colleagues might have collected that might appear in 1960s/early 1970s editions of Vietnamese Studies?

Mr. Whitehurst,

I think Cong Bao Viet Nam Cong Hoa (Official Gazette of the Republic of Vietnam) might list the number of graduates from the Saigon Medical School. Please check with the Library of Congress whether it has the Gazette.

You may contact also the "exiled" deans of medical and pharmacy schools, who have been certifying former graduates of the Saigon schools for ECFMG for Foreign Medical Graduates .

Rob and list:

The Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech possesses a copy of the Cong Bao Viet Nam Cong Hoa. In the event you find the LoC less accessible or DC too expensive for a lengthy visit for your research, we would welcome you here.

Best regards,
