Subject: Art Schools in Vietnam under the French colonization

Dear List,

Is anyone willing to help provide information on art schools established by the French in Vietnam during their colonization from 1910s to 1940s, such as Ecole de Beaux Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi?

The Library of Congress has the following titles, but they are NOT on shelf.

"Franco-Vietnamese schools 1918-1938: regional development and implications for national integration" by Gail P. Kelly, published 1982.

"C^[(Aác hoa s~i Tru´`o´ng cao d?ang m~y thuât Ðông du´o´ng = Les peintres de l'Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts de l'Indochine = Painters of the Fine Arts College of Indochina.

"Introduction générale à l'étude de la technique du peuple annamite;Published/Created: Paris, Geuthner [etc., 1908-10?]

Are the four current art schools in Vietnam (below) the same art schools created by the French?

42 Yet Kieu, HaNoi

2. University of Fine Arts HoChiMinh City

3. Hue University

Hue College of Arts

Many thanks in advance!

Lien Huong

Dear Lien Huong, There is some scholarly discussion about art and its meaning in colonial and post-colonial Vietnam about which I am sure you are aware (Nora Taylor, Geewndolyn Wright). The Gail Kelly is almost universally available by WorldCat. Two other interesting titles include:

Section coloniale - Indochine française. "Les Écoles D'art De L'indochine." In Paris, ed. Exposition internationale des arts et techniques. Hanoi: IDEO, 1937.

Balick et Balick. Trois Écoles D'art De L'indochine: Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Bien Hoa. Hanoi: IDEO, 1931.

These are also rarely available through Interlibrary loan as well as at the National Library in Hanoi (I hope still...). I can send you the latter as a .pdf or MS Word file if you'd like. The first page of that document notes the following:

Ecole superieure des Beaux arts de l'Universite de l'Indochine a Hanoi

Ecole des arts cambodgiens a Phnom Penh

Ecole d'Art de Bien Hoa

Ecole des arts decoratifs de Gia Dinh

Ecole de Thu Dau Mot (for wood-working)

The National Fine Arts School still operates in its main colonial location using the some of the same studios built by the French. The Bien Hoa School operates in a slightly different location as the original building had become too dilapidated to use. However, the Director and a retired professor are very keen to learn more about Robert and Mariettee Balick, the prime movers. about the other schools, I know less, unfortunately.

I hope this helps, and I look forward to hearing from you if you want the document via e-mail. You should reach me at ddelteest@bucknell.edu.

Best wishes, David Del Testa
