Bibliography Vietnamese Social Institution

Below, a query from a university sociology colleague - any ideas from
the VSG list? Do we have good volumes with this sort of breadth in
Vietnamese studies? Many thanks for any suggestions....

Could you please recommend to me a relatively recent book on
Vietnamese social institutions? Would need to be in English for the
student that
needs it. I teach a course in sociology on comparative family
systems. ... Each student needs to read in preparation a background
volume on their country's
history, with particular attention to culture and social
institutional topics such as law, family, schools, culture
industries.... One student ... is doing her project on Vietnam, and
I don't know of a suitable volume to recommend to her.
Philippe Papin's insightful "Vietnam, Parcours d'une nation" (Paris:
Belin, 2003) would be a strong candidate. Sad that it is not available
in English.

You can read (maybe available in english) : Stephane Dovert 's book :
"Viêt-nam contemporrain, IRASEC, 2004"
M. Verney Sébastien
Culture, Ritual and Revolution in Vietnam by Shaun Kingsley Malarney, University of Hawaii Press Honolulu 2002
Elizabeth Riley
Pham Van Bich, The Vietnamese Family in Change. The Case
of the Red River Delta. Richmond, Surrey: Curzon in
cooperation with The Nordic Institute of Asian Studies,
1999.

I should not forget my wife's book:
Tine Gammeltoft, Women's Bodies, Women's Worries: Health
and Family Planning in a Vietnamese Rural Commune. Curzon
1999.

The following spring to mind:
Neil Jamieson: Understanding Vietnam (University of
California Press, Berkeley 1995).
Helle Rydstrom: Embodying Morality. Growing up in Northern
Vietnam (University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu 2003).
Lisa Drummond and Helle Rydstrom: Gender practices in
contemporary Vietnam (Singapore University Press/ NIAS
Press, Singapore/ Copenhagen 2004).

Dear colleagues,
A number of people asked for the list I'd received of volumes that relatively broadly address Vietnamese society and culture, in response to a query from a sociology colleague interested in books for senior-level undergraduate reading that treat family life, education and a range of other topics. Here is the list I have so far, in the rough order I received these suggestions.
