Subject: [Vsg] ethnic minority dyeing of fabrics

Dear list,

A friend has asked me where he might find information on, or a person

with expertise about, the dyeing of fabrics by different minority

groups in Vietnam. I certainly don't know the answer. He's

interested in learning information such as how dyeing practices among

minorities differ throughout the country and what natural products

are used as part of the dyeing process among particular groups. He'd

like to map this all out for the whole country. Any help/advice

would be much appreciated.

Since this is fairly specific, I'm guessing it's probably best to

take this off of VSG. Anyone with information could email my friend

directly. His name is Craig Thomas and his email is

anhcraig@yahoo.com. Please cc: me too, just so I have a sense of

whether he's gotten any responses.

There is a lot of expertise within the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (www.vme.org.vn) as was

brought out in the AMNH Journeys exhibition on Vietnam. Another relevant organization is

the NGO Craft Link, No.41 Van Mieu, Hanoi; tel.: 733 61 01; fax: 843 79 26; e-mail:

craftlink@hn.vnn.vn. Their website www.craftlink-vietnam.com seems to be dysfunctional.

Two persons to try to locate are Claire Burkert (who worked with VME, Craft Link, and UNESCO

on craft development in Vietnam - I don't have her current e-mail) and Prof. Michael Howard

http://www.sfu.ca/sociology/01department/biographies/howard.html who published widely on

textiles in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
