Subject: [Vsg] Sources on đồ bộ and Vietnamese attire

Dear colleagues,

Research on the Vietnamese áo dài is plentiful, and a number of texts also pay some attention to the áo bà ba. I would be very grateful, however, for information on any sources regarding the đồ bộ in particular, as I have found virtually nothing, let alone anything reliable or with some depth.

And if Erik Harms is reading this, please can you recall what type of “peasant clothing” Mrs Lan, the trader from Hoc Mon, was wearing when she showed up at the opera house? Earlier examples in the book refer to the áo bà ba, but the attire is not specified in Mrs Lan’s example (Saigon’s Edge. On the Margins of Ho Chi Minh City, 2011, pp. 56-57). I’m curious to know if it was a đồ bộ.

Many thanks in advance!

Keep well,
