Subject: [Vsg] Documents on French Education

Dear List,

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could find primary source material on French colonial education in Vietnam? Maybe reprinted documents or appendices, or an online source?

Thanks in advance,

B. Magrath

Dear B. Magrath,

If you haven't checked Aix and Hanoi I archives, you can look under the series R. In Hanoi there is also a separate Fonds du Service de l'Enseignement du Nord Vietnam and a matching fonds for the south in Archives II in HCMC. The Goucoch education archives in HCMC II are mixed in with the rest, you have to go through all the muc luc, it's a tedious task but well worth the time.

For published sources see the Bulletin de la Societe d'Enseignment Mutuel du Tonkin/Annam/Cochinchine.

For some interesting secondary sources see Duong Duc Nhu's dissertation from Southern Illinois (August 1978) "Education in Vietnam under the French Domination 1862-1945.; Trinh van Thao's L'Ecole Francaise en Indochine.; and Micheline Lessard's dissertation from Cornell (August 1995) "Tradition for Rebellion: Vietnamese Students and Teachers and Anticolonial Resistance 1888-1931"

I hope this will help.

Best,

Christina Firpo
