Subject: [Vsg] Water-sanitation Vietnam
Dear list members,
I am interested in the water and hygiene practices in Vietnam. I am
going to do a small study regarding the subject in the Northern provinces
near Hanoi. I will stay in the small towns, so my study will be about
already urbanised areas (one small town I know already will be Ch?n Rг in B?c
K?n province).
Does anyone have any useful information about possible previous
studies, or others? My study will touch also somewhat solid waste, that is garbage,
but mainly my study will be about water, sanitation and hygiene.
Any piece of advice is welcome! Thank you!
With friendly regards,
Saara Leppдnen

Saara,
Dr. Thai Thi Ngoc Du of the Open University in HCMC did a study for the
International Center for Research on Women on Vietnamese women's role
in waste management in the informal sector. You should be able to access
it through www.icrw.org.

Well, if we are going back to Du's study in HCMC, I might was well
offer my study of recycling in Hanoi, carried out in 1992.

I did some further research on recycling between 1995-1997, funded by
Waste Foundation, in Gouda. You can find this through some re-directed
websites. I think Waste Foundation may no longer exist. Dr. Virginia
Maclaren (U. Toronto) further expanded this line of research in a 10
year project on the Waste Economy (Google waste economy Toronto or waste
economy nistpass). Lots of reports and theses.
At the same time, Swiss aid carried out a project on solid waste
management in secondary cities in northern Vietnam. Minh Chau, at Swiss Aid,
might help you find some reports.

Saara,
You would do well to contact Bob Catherman of Medrix, a US-based NGO
doing
water and sanitation work (as well as many other things) in central VN.
His e-mail address is above.
Cheers,
Joe Hannah
