Books on Colonial Hanoi

Can anyone recommend some good books on the building of colonial Hanoi? I've just finished Michael Vann's "Great Hanoi Rat Hunt", which was brilliant and a very thoughtful and entertaining way into the history and issues around France's grand aspirations of colonial modernity. But I'm struggling to find many other texts which use Hanoi, the city, as the vehicle with which to tell that story.

Thank you Balazs, and how nice to hear from you again on this side of the world.

These are excellent – thank you. If you also know of some broader studies or overviews, like Vann’s Hanoi Rat Hunt, but perhaps with more granular detail, please do let me know.

You’ve probably already read Bill Logan’s book on the architecture and planning of Hanoi. But if not, it’s an excellent place to start:

Logan, W. S. (2000). Hanoi: Biography of a city. UNSW Press.

You might find Shaun Malarney’s translation of and introductory chapter to Lục Xì to be useful, too:

Phụng, V. T. (2011). Lục Xì: Prostitution and venereal disease in colonial Hanoi. University of Hawai'i Press.

Immodestly, I can also suggest the following chapter which may be of interest:

Drummond, Lisa B Welch (2013) Colonial Hanoi: Urban Space in Public Discourse. In Victor Zatsepine and Laura Victoir (eds) From Harbin to Hanoi: Colonial Built Environment in Asia, 1840-1940. Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press, 207-230.

Happy reading.

Hello all,

In addition to Lisa's excellent suggestions, is this recent volume. It presents a comparative analysis of Hanoi and a city in Africa:
