American program
The exhibit entitled "Exit Saigon, Enter Little Saigon" will open
January 19, 2007 at the Smithsonian S. Dillon Ripley Center, Concourse
Gallery. This
is the first Vietnamese American historical exhibit at the Smithsonian.
The exhibit
tells the story of the Vietnamese American experience in America, from
the
significant influx in 1975 to the present. By showcasing themes of
challenges, contributions and change, the exhibit emphasizes the
vibrant diversity
of this ethnic community. The exhibit focuses on several core topics:
The refugee exodus from Vietnam and entry into the United States
Adaptation and adjustment of Vietnamese to American life
Ethnic communities and identities that formed from these new
immigrants, as well as their contributions to America
Hybrid creations that combine Vietnamese and American cultural
elements, from fashion to food to film.
We hope you'll come and share the rich experience that has been Vietnamese America. The exhibit will be at the Concourse Gallery, Smithsonian D. Dillon Ripley Center, 1100 Jefferson Drive, SW, Washington, DC from January 19,2007- March 31, 2007. It is expected that the traveling exhibition will commence later in 2007 and travel the country for 3 years.
