Reporters Without Borders (RSF) have just released their 2008 Press Freedom Index. Vietnam has fallen six places to 168th out of 173.
Here is the list of countries in what would, in English football at least, be called the relegation zone:
166 Iran
167 China
168 Vietnam
169 Cuba
170 Burma
171 Turkmenistan
172 North Korea
173 Eritrea
RSF ascribes the fall to "a crackdown on the liberal media for being too probing in its reporting on corruption"

Where does the US fall in that ranking? The totalitarian states are in the 'correct' positions, but what about the liberal USA?

And, of course - and I know Bill would certainly agree - not all the countries above 165 are in what we might call the Premier League....

Viet Nam's neighbors are also suffering in their rankings right now: Thailand has suffered from the ongoing political struggles, Burma with the aftermath of the hurricane, and China during the Olympics. The US has greatly improved their ranking since last year.
