Subject: [Vsg] About Vietnamese Notes (500 Dong)

Dear all,

One of my friends urgently needs some information about this banknote of Vietnam, which might be used in 1970s.

Who is on this note? I guess that it might be Ly Thai To but not pretty much sure.

Where was this note issued and used if it was used before the reunification of Vietnam ?

During what period did Vietnamese people use this note?

Many thanks in advance.

Best,

Juhyung, Shim

National Bank of (South) Vietnam. The notes feature Tran Hung Dao (the picture shows him leading a naval battle). These notes were printed in 1966 until it was replaced by the 1970 series (orange with a picture of the Bank on it).

Dear Juhyung,

It's not Ly Thai To on the note, it's Tra^`n Hu+ng Dda.o, also venerated as "Ddu+'c Tha'nh Tra^`n" (meaning "the Venerable Saint Tran"). I don't know exactly when it was issued, but surely in the 60s, in South Vietnam. I was a student at Saigon at that time, this bank note was widely used, and "Duc Thanh Tran" was our slang to designate "big money", because 500 Dong was the biggest note in value in circulation (and an important sum of money for a poor student!).
