History of science in Vietnam

Dear List,

Does anyone know of any good works, presumably in Vietnamese, on the history of science in Vietnam? I cannot recall coming across anything of this sort, and wonder if it exists. Ideally, I'm thinking of something that runs the gamut from Vietnamese mathematicians to medical to military technology in the pre-1900 period. I've come across mentions of mathematicians, eg. Phan Huy On (I believe), and know about the major medical figures of course, and know that Durand has some discussion in his Connaissance du Vietnam of various technologies and belief systems regarding the natural world, but would love anything else that people could suggest, whether in article or book form.

Thanks.

George

George (and anyone else interested),

Google "Alexei Volkov" "mathematics" "Vietnam" and some stuff should come up.

Dear George,

I have a couple of things I can send you which you may or may not already have. Also for mathematics check Alexei Volkov I’m not sure how much he has published, I think I have one article in a compendium and I’ll check that at home, but he has been giving conference presentations for years on Vietnamese mathematicians.

cheers

Michele

Thanks Liam,

Volkov's work looks fascinating, especially his detailed entry in the Oxford Handbook of the History of Mathematics (which comes up on GoogleBooks). The bibliography also yields the following:

Tạo Văn, (ed?) Tìm hiêủ khoa học kỹ thuật trong lịch sư ̉ Việt Nam (NXBKHXH, 1979), which looks quite promising and I cannot wait to get a look at it.

Hi List,

Nguyen Thuy Linh (Thuy LInh Nguyen) also wrote a dissertation (U Penn 2009) on the medicalization of midwives. I believe she also has an article coming out in JVS.

Best,

Christina
