While History does not repeat itself in the simplistic ways so often attributed to it, the publication of this edited volume on Europe and the Vietnam War reminds us that the recent American decision to go it largely alone in Iraq was not the first war to divide Europe, whether in the streets or behind closed doors. The Vietnam War challenged European leaders in terms of their wider diplomatic relationships with the U.S., their participation in NATO and the U.N., and their relationships with their own publics increasingly opposed to the war. Indeed, the Anti-Vietnam War movement itself influenced internal national politics, cultures, and impacted upon how many Europeans would view later conflicts and, perhaps, themselves.

This volume brings together American, European and Vietnamese scholars and actors to analyse the complexity of the European role in and reaction to the Vietnam War between 1963 and 1973, symbolised by the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. This book is published under the direction of Maurice Vaïsse, professor of international relations at the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) in Paris, and Christopher Goscha, researcher at the Institut d'Asie Orientale in Lyon and assistant professor at the University of Lyon II.

Etrange concordance des temps ! Alors que des historiens s'efforçaient -- trente ans après la signature des accords de Paris de janvier 1973 -- d'analyser l'attitude des Européens à l'égard de la guerre du Vietnam, une autre guerre se préparait, d'autres malentendus transatlantiques allaient naître.

De nouveau on allait voir : les Etats-Unis -- passant d'un multilatéralisme proclamé à un unilatéralisme sans complexes -- décider d'une action guerrière au Moyen-Orient, les gouvernements européens divsés sur la conduite à suivre : aider ou non les Américains ?, les opinions publiques européennes s'enflammer contre la guerre en Irak, l'incompréhension se creuser entre les deux rives de l'Atlantique. Depuis lors, l'enlisement de la coalition victorieuse incite des observateurs à évoquer aussi le Vietnam, en dépit des grandes différences entre les deux situations. Bref, l'histoire bégaie-t-elle ?

Des chercheurs américains, européens, vietnamiens ont analysé la place et le rôle de l'Europe dans la guerre du Vietnam. Voici leurs conclusions dans un livre publié sous la direction de Christopher Goscha (maître de conférences à l'Université de Lyon et chercheur à l'Institut d'Asie Orientale, Lyon) et Maurice Vaïsse (professeur d'histoire à l'Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris).
