I have not heard from Anh Son since his expulsion. The article linked does not specify exactly what he is accused of..
I have known him since 1995 when he was still a graduate student working at the Thua Thiien Hue Museum.
TDAS has cultivated a personality that many Vietnamese describe as "ngang." and made enemies among the CP leadership for objecting to some of their ideas. As a result, his tenure as director of the Center for the Preservation of Hue Antiquities was fairly stormy. I suspect his lack of tact also created problems for him in Danang.
I would not know if putting his research on FB was the "sin" that got him expelled. His cartographic project certainly had the support of the state, hence his Fulbright.

Has anyone heard from Tran Duc Anh Son since this article? He spearheaded a conference on the South China / East Sea conflict at Yale a couple of years ago when he was a visiting Fulbright scholar. https://cseas.yale.edu/conflict-south-china-sea At that time the Vietnamese government seemed supportive of his work and even sent delegates from Vietnam’s mission to the UN.

I think I met Tran Duc Anh Son once in Da Nang. His work is not much different from what has been accomplished at several locations in Hanoi. Publications on China are of course carefully vetted at multiple levels. It’s TDAS’s decision to put his findings on Facebook that did him in. Since the early 1970s there is no topic in VN more sensitive than ‘China’….
