Can you tell me if there is such a thing as a list of Vietnamese archaeological
terms translated into English equivalents?
Cheers

Dear Mark and Carl,
Yes there is a list of archaeological terms produced by the Institute of Archaeology in Hanoi. But it is (as far as I know) out of print. The last copy I know of was given to Prof. Helmut Loofs-Wissowa who is at the ANU and can be reached via Vera Joveska Vera.Joveska@anu.edu.au
I'll also copy this message to Dr Long at the Archaeology Inst.
Cheers, Vern

I stand corrected. In fact I brought a copy of the book
to Viet Nam a few years ago for my colleagues at the Arch.

I was just reading through a copy of a dictionary published by Dr. Loofs-Wissowa in 199o here in the Yale library (citation below), so I imagine the ANU library has it.

I have two specialized dictionaries [tu dien] Russian - French - Vietnamese. Glossaries really. Not English I am afraid, but many of the technical French terms are very similar to English. For the Vietnamese terms - developing very fast - they do not seem quite up-to-date.
1) Tu dien thuat ngu su hoc - dan toc hoc - kao co hoc Nga - Phap - Viet. Hanoi 1978: NXB Khoa hoc Xa hoi. The publication was edited under the auspices of the Institute of Linguistics by Trong Bau, with advice from Ha Van Tan for the archaeological part. Three lists of words: Russian-VN-French; French-VN-Russian; Russian-French. 178 pp.
2) Tu dien thuat ngu khoa hoc xa hoi. Hanoi 1979: NXB KHXH. Same set of characters but different composition with three parts - Russian-VN, Franch-VN, VN-Russian. 561 pp.

Dear all I'm sending this to the whole list as someone else may be interested.
There is a Vietnamese-English Archaeological glossary originally published by ANU press. Author is Helmut Loofs-Wissowa, it has recently been reissued by U. Hawaii press. I've seen the original and it is very helpfull, as soon as the one I've ordered comes in the mail I can give you full publication information for the new edition.
HOpe this is helpfull
