subject [Vsg] Mayors of Hanoi
A couple of questions to throw out to the list:
Does anyone have or know of a chronological list of the mayors of Hanoi and their terms of
office? In the first instance I'm looking for a list of the colonial era mayors, but it
would be most useful to have a list of all mayors/Chairs of the Hanoi People's Committee,
French and Vietnamese, up to the present.
In case it's useful to anyone else, I found a list of the Residents (Tonkin, Annam,
Cochinchine) and Gouverneurs Generaux, etc on the French Wikepedia... It may not be a
foolproof list; I notice that the capital of French Indochina is given as "Saigon". Link:

I'm also looking for background/bio data on H Virgitti who was mayor in the late 1930s, if
anyone can suggest sources. And on the editors of l'Avenir du Tonkin, if anyone knows of
good sources about them or the paper. I recall someone posting something to the list about
l'Avenir du Tonkin quite some time ago; if anyone is writing on the history of the paper I
would very much like to hear about their work.

Hiere is the list of Hanoi Mayors after independence 1954 that I found in the Hanoi goverment
website (in Vietnamese):
Mr. Tran Duy Hung: 4/11/1954, first term (1957), second term (1961), 3rd term (1965); fourth
term (1968), fifth term (1971).
Tran Vy: 6th term (1974), 7th (1977), 8th (1991)
Tran Tan: 9th (1985)
Le At Hoi: 10th (1989)
Hoang Van Nghien: 11th (1994), 12th(1999).
Currently, the major is Nguyen Quoc Trieu (perhaps from 2003?).

Dear Lisa,
You might try contacting Michael Vann at Cal State Sacramento...he's
done work on Hanoi. Likewise, Philippe Papin just came out with a
history of Hanoi, so he might know. In Hanoi, I have heard rumors of
a Hanoi Studies Institute somewhere. And, another source for colonial
governors from around the world:
