Dear list,

I wonder if any research has been conducted about Năm Cam, a famous gangster who was born in Saigon. He was charged with murder, and organizing gambling, prostitution, bribery and illegal migration. He was executed in June 2004.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards.

in the paper entitled " mapping vietnam's legal cultures: reflections on corruption, organized crime, and state building in the post socialist era" presented at the symposium entitled "mapping vietnam's legal culture: where is vietnam going?" organized at the U of Victoria in 2003, i had a section focusing on the nam cam scandal. the discussion is not about nam cam per se. it is more about the discourse on the "corruption" network from the perspective of the state (operating within the Ordinance on Anti-Corruption of 1998- the Law on Anti-Corruption was not born yet), those within the network, and those outside. nam cam was a successful briber with an interesting way of talking about corruption.

one of sources of information on nam cam that could be useful, and if you have time to look, is lao dong newspapers published from the end of 2003 to mid-2004. i am not sure whether the articles on nam cam will still come up if you google.
