Dear List-

I'm hoping to use an image from Le Minh Truong that appeared recently in the National Geographic publication, "Another Vietnam: Pictures of the War from the Other Side." The image is of a malaleuca forest near U Minh that had been defoliated in 1970. Does anyone know how I might get in touch with Mr. Truong or an agency that has rights to his war photography?

Dear David,

I'd contact the offices of National Geographic about the book, since they've published the photo once they should know who has the rights to republish.

cheers

Can't help you but I do have aerial pictures of Plei Me and Ducco that were defoliated in 1966. This area is in the Central Highlands just east of the Thu Pong mountains and the Cambodia border. Just west of Plieku.

A friend who is a photo editor said you should simply contact National Geographic. They must have the rights to the photo.

Thanks everyone for responding. The Journal's (Environmental History) photo editor contacted NG about the photo and it was the person there who said National Geographic did not have rights to the image and to find the original VN source. If anyone in HCMC could contact the Hoi Si Nhiep Anh, I think a rep from that Assn could probably help me get a contact info for Le Minh Truong or his agent.

Best-

I responded to David's query directly but figured that my response might be useful for the list as a whole, because it refers to a great resource which is not widely known in the Vietnam studies community. I am speaking of Visiting Arts which developed a great resource for all sorts of information including contact info of most culture and arts organizations in Vietnam. The Visiting Arts Vietnam Directory which is available in book form but also online accessible at: http://www.culturalprofiles.org.uk/Visiting_Arts/Directories/Overview/-8.

html. In the hard copy the Hoi nghe si nhiep anh tp HCM can be found on page 255, in the online version under url http://www.culturalprofiles.org.uk/Viet%5FNam/Units/668.html. The address then: Hoi nghe si nhiep anh tp HCM, 122 Suong Nguyet Anh, Q 1, phone/fax +84-8-839 7740.
